World of Warcraft just surprised players by announcing the next three expansion packs during BlizzCon. Titled The War Within, Midnight, and The Last Titan, these three content updates are a part of The Worldsoul Saga–the new multi-expansion storytelling experience in World of Warcraft.

Blizzard President Mike Ybarra had previously confirmed the Warcraft franchise had the most to show off this year at BlizzCon. Between the launch of Warcraft Rumble, new content for Hearthstone, and an expected announcement for the next World of Warcraft expansion, fans had high expectations going into the convention.

World of Warcraft players looking to soar the Dragon Isles the old fashioned way in Patch 10.2 will be able to do so much faster than they thought.

However, World of Warcraft showed much more than just the next expansion. During the presentation, WoW executive creative director Chris Metzen introduced players to the Worldsoul Saga–a new three-expansion storyline that begins next year. This narrative starts with World of Warcraft: The War Within in 2024, and will continue in World of Warcraft: Midnight and World of Warcraft: The Last Titan afterward.

What expansions are in the Worldsoul Saga in World of Warcraft?

  • World of Warcraft: The War Within
    • Explore the continent of Khaz Algar, the Isle of Dorn, The Ringing Deeps, Hallowfall, and the Nerubian kingdom of Azj-Kahet.
    • Alleria, Thrall, Anduin, and Xal’atath play major roles as darkness threatens the deep places of Azeroth.
  • World of Warcraft: Midnight
    • Return to Quel’thalas as the forces of the Void seek to snuff out the Sunwell.
    • The conflict between the Light and the Void will be the focus of this story.
  • World of Warcraft: The Last Titan
    • Takes place in Northrend and Ulduar, and acts as the culmination of the Worldsoul Saga.
    • The Titans return to Azeroth, and players will uncover a vast conspiracy that will reconceptualize the god-like beings' goals and actions, as well as the true purpose of Azeroth.

From Metzen’s words during the announcement, these World of Warcraft expansions may be smaller than previous releases have been. It also seems Dragonflight Patch 10.2 may be the last major patch of the expansion, with The War Within dropping sometime next year. It remains to be seen how exactly the release schedule will work, but it sounds like there will be smaller WoW expansions more often, rather than bigger ones every two years.

Players can expect to learn more about The War Within during the rest of BlizzCon, as well as over the next several months as the story of Dragonflight wraps up in Patch 10.2 and beyond. Though Midnight and The Last Titan may not get new information right away, players will certainly see more hints of these upcoming storylines as The War Within plays out.
