Highlights

  • Tracking character silhouette through objects is easier in World of Warcraft: The War Within thanks to a new visual toggle option.
  • The Silhouette feature highlights characters through obstacles, but not NPCs or players.
  • The War Within beta testing brings quality-of-life improvements like the Warbands system and a Dragonriding overhaul.

World of Warcraft just implemented a new quality-of-life feature in The War Within beta that lets players track their silhouette through objects. This option will make keeping track of one’s character through obstacles and environments much easier once it goes live in the next World of Warcraft expansion.

Right now, World of Warcraft is beta testing The War Within, its next expansion pack. The new release adds tons of quality-of-life improvements, many of which are associated with the Warbands system or the Skyriding overhaul to Dragonflight’s Dragonriding.

During the Xbox Games Showcase, Blizzard reveals when World of Warcraft players can begin The War Within expansion.

However, one new accessibility feature found in the World of Warcraft: The War Within beta is on the interface side of things. Called “Show Silhouette When Obstructed,” this visual toggle highlights the character’s silhouette as a dark shadow if they are blocked by certain objects in the world. Using this option, players will be able to keep track of their characters more easily while traveling through bushes, trees, or other similar items.

Show Silhouette Option in WoW: The War Within

  • When the character is obstructed by objects, their silhouette is highlighted, allowing their model to be tracked through obstacles.
  • This toggle is located in the Combat tab of the Gameplay Options.

Right now, this feature doesn’t seem to highlight characters through bosses, NPCs, or other players, so it won’t help much in crowded areas unless they add this functionality later. It also does not help with walls, as they obstruct the camera and push the field of vision in front of it. The feature seems finicky about what exactly it works with, but it generally seems to show the silhouette through plants, signs, and most environmental objects like fountains, fences, and the corners of buildings.

Either way, most players agree this new option is a universal win for World of Warcraft. Few things are more annoying than losing track of one’s character in a thicket, or being hit by an AoE because of the set dressing of a boss fight arena, so this option should help fans avoid these frustrations. While many wish it worked for some bosses in World of Warcraft, whose large sizes can easily obscure player models, this toggle is still a major win all around.

More Useful Features Are Coming With The War Within

This isn’t the only quality-of-life feature coming in The War Within. World of Warcraft is also adding a toggle to hide standard quests they have completed on other characters, removing the mini-map clutter on alt characters. Players can expect these features and more in The War Within Pre-Patch, which will likely arrive around a month before World of Warcraft: The War Within on August 26.
