Highlights

  • World of Warcraft is suspending the character restoration service during Pre-Patch for The War Within.
  • The restoration function allows players to recreate deleted characters, but has a seven-day cooldown.
  • The War Within Pre-Patch is expected around July 23, with the restoration feature expected to return before the expansion release.

World of Warcraft is temporarily suspending the character restoration service once The War Within rolls out its Pre-Patch. Fans who need to use this service should make sure to do so before this World of Warcraft update, as it may be several weeks before it is reactivated.

The character restoration function allows World of Warcraft players to immediately recreate characters they have deleted in the past. So long as the character has not been permanently purged from the database for being under level 50 for a certain amount of time, this free World of Warcraft game service lets fans bring their deleted toons back from oblivion, though it has a seven-day cooldown once used.

NetEase Reveals New World of Warcraft Statue

Over a year after destroying its predecessor, NetEase reveals a new World of Warcraft statue to commemorate its renewed partnership with Blizzard.

However, this useful feature is going to be temporarily disabled in the near future. World of Warcraft recently announced that, once the Pre-Patch for The War Within arrives, the Restore Character button will be unavailable for a few weeks to help accommodate the transition to the new Warbands system. It advised players to use this service now if they need to, as characters can still be permanently purged from the database during this time.

How to Restore a Character in World of Warcraft

  • Players can restore deleted characters once every seven days by pressing the Restore Character button, located next to the Create a New Character button on the login screen.
  • Characters can no longer be restored after certain conditions are met:
    • Under level 10 or on a Class Trial
    • An Allied Race or Hero class at their starting level
    • 90 days after deletion if between levels 10 and 29
    • 120 days after deletion if between levels 30 and 49
  • Characters cannot be restored if there are already 65 characters on their WoW account.
  • Players may have to rename their character if their previous name was taken after their initial deletion.

The War Within Pre-Patch doesn’t have a solid release date yet, but evidence suggests World of Warcraft will be implementing it on or around July 23. With The War Within itself releasing about a month later, it sounds like the Restore Character button may be back shortly before the expansion releases. Fans can expect to learn the exact timing for the update within the next week or two.

Regardless, the disabling of this character feature makes sense. Warbands are revolutionizing how World of Warcraft players interface with their characters, and the new system streamlines how data is stored across multiple toons; the process of consolidating this information while also restoring characters is likely a technical and logistical nightmare. By the time the feature is reinstated, World of Warcraft should be able to make sure there are no issues when fans try to bring back their deleted characters.
