World of Warcraft players have collectively spent millions of years inside the game. While some players stick to just one character, others prefer to jump between different classes or races in order to get as much of the gameplay experience as possible. As a result, many World of Warcraft players are now used to leveling new characters, knowing which quests to avoid and which areas provide the most experience.

With the new Chromie Time feature in the Shadowlands pre-patch, this is even easier to accomplish. Players can simply select a previous expansion and choose to level their character in that area rather than being forced to do the exact same starting quests that they have always done. It was only a matter of time before somebody figured out the fastest way to level a new character, and one of the most well-known World of Warcraft streamers seems to have blown the competition away.

Twitch streamer DesMephisto successfully leveled a new character from 1 to 50 in 3 hours and 33 minutes. For comparison, the average fastest way to level a new character in Chromie Time was by adventuring through the Warlords of Draenor expansion for 12 hours. Hitting level 50 in under 4 hours involved a specific set of buffs and an alignment of two events in order to do so. He chose Death Knight for class and Dark Iron Dwarves for race, since both come with extra time-saving abilities.

The first buff that DesMephisto took advantage of is the current World of Warcraft Anniversary buff that grants 16% extra experience to players, celebrating the 16 years that the game has been around. This buff aligned with the Darkmoon Faire being up and allowed the speedrunner to grab some Darkmoon Top Hats that grant 10% additional experience on top of that.

It seems fitting that this was accomplished during the Anniversary celebration. Players can grab a special World of Warcraft cloak during this time and now, because of this new record, they will be able to get another new item once Shadowlands releases. The game developers created a special Plate item in celebration of this. Players will be able to get the gloves “Desm’s Fistos” in honor of the streamer.

Because it isn’t terribly common for two experience events to overlap like this, it makes this record slightly more difficult to break. Other players—or DesMephisto himself—will likely find another way to replicate this speedrun eventually, but it stands on its own for now. In the meantime, players have plenty to accomplish in preparation of the Shadowlands expansion. If any player is trying to level some alts before then, they may want to take advantage of the Anniversary experience boost and try to follow DesMephisto’s now-legendary run.

World of Warcraft is available now on PC.
