It's been just over a week since the release of World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, the eighth expansion for Blizzard's landmark MMO. Like many of its predecessors, Shadowlands introduces a new land for players to explore, taking on quests and completing dungeons. The titular Shadowlands are World of Warcraft's realm of the dead, with the hellish Maw at the center.

In gameplay terms, the Maw is a max-level zone designed for late-game play. The Shadowlands are in turmoil, and the Maw, which was once reserved for only the most sinful of souls, is now absorbing all souls, and growing stronger. For that reason, the Maw is also the focus of the Weekly Quest Return the Souls, which requires players to save souls from the Maw.

Saving Souls

Return the Souls is offered by the Soul Warden NPC in each Covenant's Sanctum in the Shadowlands. This means there are four quest givers for the Weekly quest: Soulguide Daelia for the Kyrian, Flutterby for the Night Fae, Tenaval for the Venthyr, and Osbourne Black for the Necrolords. Once players have picked up the quest, which can be done from level 50 onwards, they'll be tasked with rescuing 5-20 Souls from the Maw.

The Souls can be found scattered across World of Warcraft's new Maw region, and are either Imprisoned, Caged, or Wailing. Imprisoned Souls are trapped inside piles of rocks, which must be destroyed before they can be saved. Caged Souls are contained within Soul Cages, and can be released simply by interacting with the cage. Finally, Wailing Souls periodically cast a fear effect, and can easily be saved between their casts. To save any Soul, all players need to do is get close and interact with it.

It's Own Reward

Once players have collected the required number of Souls, all they need to do is head back to their Shadowlands' Covenant's Soul Warden to finish the quest. Return the Souls always offers the same rewards, although the amounts can change. Firstly, players will gain an Emblem of Renown, to help them build the new resource within their chosen Covenant.

In addition, players will earn a good chunk of World of Warcraft Gold, the game's primary currency. Finally, they'll earn Redeemed Souls. This new currency is used in conjunction with Shadowlands' Reservoir Anima in order to unlock upgrades for the player's Covenant Sanctum. Once a player reaches Renown level 15, and again later at 32, they'll gain a Soulkeeper upgrade, allowing them the chance to gather more Redeemed Souls per Return the Souls quest.
