World of Warcraft has been gathering an increased level of criticism recently, both as a result of the Activision Blizzard controversy and for its own flaws, but it can't be denied that this MMORPG had made its mark on history. One of the many highlights of the game's history was its second expansion pack, Wrath of the Lich King, which continued the tragic tale of Prince Arthas Menethil. Now, one fan is creating a real-life lightsaber replica of Frostmourne, the fearsome weapon of one of World of Warcraft's most famous villains.

Frostmourne is a two-handed longsword that features glowing blue runes, a jagged blade, and a horned skull on the crossguard. This necromantic blade can imprison the souls of its victims and transform the living into mindless undead. Arthas wielded Frostmourne throughout his time as a Death Knight and during his tenure as the Lich King until it was finally broken.

Tethan Props recently shared a photograph of a completed replica of Frostmourne, but reimagined as a lightsaber. Only the hilt is shown in the picture and accompanying in-progress video. Despite the lack of a blade, the sword is already incredibly detailed and strikingly game-accurate. This isn't the first time World of Warcraft fans have recreated the Lich King's regalia, but it has the potential to be one of the most spectacular.

Frostmourne is typically represented in the game and in art with a glowing blue blade that seems to be made of frost rather than metal. This trait would make it a good pick for fans interested in converting it to a lightsaber. However, rather than stick to the typical lightsaber blade found in Star Wars, Tethan Props has declared an intent to give this weapon a custom acrylic blade - presumably one with more of a resemblance to the original jagged blade.

The result will likely be incredibly striking, if one of Tethan Props' previous creations - a King Elessar lightsaber based on Aragorn's crown and sword - is anything to go by.

As of writing, it appears that other fans are enthusiastic to see the finished piece. A group of users began discussing what the blade should look like, with one side agreeing that it should be ice blue with dry ice steam coming off the blade and another side arguing for a Permafrost lightsaber crystal. Unfortunately, since Permafrost crystals were exclusively found on Hoth in a galaxy far, far away, Tethan Props is unlikely to use one in this project.

World of Warcraft is available on PC.
