World of Warcraft just teased the return of a popular character from Legion and Battle for Azeroth. This hint was found in one of the cutscenes introduced in the latest World of Warcraft content update, Fractures in Time.

Warning: This article has SPOILERS for World of Warcraft's Fracture in Time update.

Recently, World of Warcraft released Patch 10.1.5, Fractures in Time. One of the biggest features of the new update was the Dawn of the Infinite megadungeon. The Infinite Dragonflight and Iridikron, the Primal Incarnate of earth, have teamed up, and players must stop them as they attempt to meddle with the timeline to corrupt Nozdormu into Murozond.

However, once players complete the dungeon, they are treated to a short cutscene featuring Iridikron and Chromie. Though players are able to stop the Infinite Dragonflight, Iridkron successfully captures the essence of Galakrond, the biggest dragon in World of Warcraft, and flees through a void portal. When he does, keen-eyed players may notice the shadow of a female elf in the bottom right corner of the portal. Given her silhouette, and the obvious association with the void, many players believe this mysterious figure to be Xal’atath.

In Legion, Xal’atath was the name of the Shadow Priest Artifact weapon, a curved knife also known as the Blade of the Black Empire that houses a powerful void entity that many speculate may even be World of Warcraft's fifth Old God. The knife also played a large role in Battle for Azeroth, where the eponymous entity within it was released from the blade and went on to possess a Blood Elf woman. Now free, Xal’atath left through a void portal, promising she would see the champion of Azeroth again someday. If this figure is indeed Xal’atath, that day may be coming soon.

Players are ecstatic over the idea of Iridikron teaming up with Xal’atath. The combination of Xal’atath’s smooth voice and charismatic-yet-questionable motives led many to give her affectionate nicknames like “Knaifu,” “Knife Wife,” and “Baeblade.” On the other hand, many World of Warcraft fans consider Iridikron to be one of the best villains in recent memory, if not in the game’s history. Dealing with both of these beloved villains at the same time could be a dream come true for their fans.

Of course, until the mysterious figure is revealed, players can’t be certain it was Xal’atath. It is possible it could also have been the elven visage of Queen Azshara, another popular void-wielding villain in World of Warcraft, or even a new character. Either way, it seems Iridikron’s schemes are setting up a major void-themed plot arc, so fans can’t wait to see where the mastermind of the Primalists will show up next.

World of Warcraft is available now for PC.
