There are loads of activities for players to do in World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, from fighting giant proto-drakes to zooming through the skies on a dragon of their own. However, not all the expansion’s features are death-defying tests of skill and perseverance. Sometimes, all players need is some time off from saving the world.

The Little Scales Daycare is a quest hub that was added to World of Warcraft during the Fractures in Time update. While there were plenty of momentous, world-ending threats to battle in that patch, one feature took a complete departure from the content players have come to expect. This wholesome diversion is a great way to experience the positive effects that players have on NPCs.

Players Can Help Raise Baby Dragons in World of Warcraft: Dragonflight

At the beginning of Dragonflight’s story, players helped restore each of the Oathstones across the Dragon Isles, allowing all of Azeroth’s dragons to finally reconnect with their roots. For the first time in ten thousand years, dragons can hatch from their eggs surrounded by caretakers and the magic that makes them strong. Having earned the dragonflights' trust, the player is asked if they would like to participate in raising these little dragons.

If the player is so inclined, they can help these whelps by placing their eggs near their corresponding Oathstone and introducing themselves as the baby dragon emerges. The whelpling is then taken to the Little Scales Daycare in Valdrakken, where players then pick up daily quests to help around. One baby from each of WoW's five dragonflights is involved, and every one has a unique personality.

With the help of experienced caretakers, the player needs to feed the whelps, play with them, and teach them life lessons. Some whelps need to learn to be brave, while others must be taught to play nicely with the other dragons. They play chase and hide and seek, they listen to stories and they have special toys. Even Warcraft pet battles are incorporated into these daily quests so that the baby dragons can learn from their animal companions.

As an added feature, players can also train these whelps to fly, taking them through unique timed courses, not unlike those in World of Warcraft’s new Dragonriding feature. As the whelps grow in confidence and ability, they can be used by the player as permanent companion pets, even possessing their own pet battle abilities. Flightstones and Polished Pet Charms can be earned by the player as well, incentivizing them to return to the daycare.

The Little Scales Daycare is by no means a necessary endeavor for players. It’s designed to be nothing more than a wholesome, relaxing diversion from saving the world. It allows players to bond with these little whelps and really understand the minutiae of what it means to be a dragon in World of Warcraft. It’s also heartwarming to see each baby intermingling with whelps from other dragonflights since the dragons had been separated for so long.

Now, the new generation of each of the five dragonflights can bond with one another, repairing a past of bitter loss and hatred. Black dragons in particular can start anew in their ancestral homeland, knowing nothing of the trauma suffered by previous generations. Hope has returned to dragonkind with the arrival of these whelps, so the Little Scales Daycare also has a significant lore impact on the game.

Whether players have little interest in dragon daycare or they’re loving every second of it, Little Scales is a neat addition to Dragonflight. Optional activities are essential for any MMORPG, especially those that introduce an unexpectedly wholesome way to relax. On top of that, earning a number of adorable baby dragon companions is a bonus that few could stand to ignore.
