Over the past few days, Zack Snyder has been revealing teasers to promote his much-awaited Zack Snyder’s Justice League. After shining the spotlight on Batman, Superman, Aquaman, and The Flash, it was obvious that the remaining two characters of the Justice League would soon receive a mention. But, Snyder offered a special honor to Wonder Woman, revealing a 40-second teaser and the character’s poster on International Women’s Day, marked on March 8.
The two items were shared on the Snyder’s Vero page, using #IWD2021 in the caption to commemorate the day that celebrates the achievements of women around the globe. They also happen to arrive on the same day as WarnerMedia’s announcement of a global campaign to celebrate Wonder Woman’s 80th anniversary of her first comics appearance. The event, called “Believe in Wonder,” begins on International Women’s Day and will end on October 21, Wonder Woman Day.
The teaser focuses on Diana Prince remembering the lessons she has learned that prepared her for the battle against Darkseid and Steppenwolf. Various voices can be heard, narrating dialogues that have previously been heard in the Wonder Woman franchise, reminding the Amazonian hero of what is at stake. This structure is the common factor between the various teasers released for the other Justice League members. What stands out in the teaser is the shot of Wonder Woman going up against Snyder’s scarier version of Steppenwolf.
As the only female superhero on the Justice League in the DC Extended Universe, Wonder Woman has become an important character over time, representing a segment of DC fans that have previously gone unnoticed. The DCEU has been largely male-dominated, with female characters generally playing either the love interest of the male lead, acting as a support system in some team-up superhero movies, or playing a villainous role. Wonder Woman, however, changed that trend.
Having first appeared in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman soon became an integral part of the DCEU. Though her role in the first film was a short one, her presence was appreciated by fans. From her epic introduction scene to her fighting alongside Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman, the Amazonian warrior had suddenly become a fan favorite. Her first solo film, Wonder Woman, arrived on the big screen in 2017 and Gal Gadot reprised the role in 2017’s Justice League, followed by 2020’s Wonder Woman 1984.
While Snyder portrayed Wonder Woman as a fierce warrior, who could easily go head-to-head against DC’s supervillain Doomsday, Joss Whedon’s take on the Justice League did not do her justice. While all of the Justice League characters suffered after Whedon took over the project, Gadot’s Wonder Woman was reduced to being an object of sexualization in several Justice League scenes. Many fans who requested for the release of the Snyder Cut raised this issue several times, demanding that Wonder Woman be returned to her pre-Whedon glory. And it seems like Snyder has heard all their pleas, with the teasers representing Wonder Woman, once again, as a hero who can stand alone and fight the mightiest of villains.
