  • Warner Bros. Discovery's CEO has expressed a focus on "always on gameplay through live services," indicating a company-wide strategy of Games as a Service.
  • The inclusion of live-service in Monolith's Wonder Woman game may be met with skepticism from the gaming community, but the developer's approach aligns with the company's strategy.

A recent job description has hinted that Monolith's upcoming Wonder Woman game could incorporate live-service. In December 2021, Monolith officially unveiled its Wonder Woman game at The Game Awards, followed by nearly two years of secrecy. Now, Warner Bros. Discovery may have indirectly hinted at what fans can expect from the superhero title.

When it comes to DC Comics-based games, expectations tend to be high from players, thanks in large part to hits like the Injustice series and the Arkham games. However, upcoming project Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has been met with a lot of criticism from the community due to its live-service-heavy approach. The complaints were loud enough that the developer pushed Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League to 2024, though many remain skeptical about how far the game can change to appease the player base. Interestingly, it now appears that this might not be the only DC Comics-based live-service project in the works.

One job posting for a Lead Software Engineer of Gameplay has indicated that Monolith's Wonder Woman game could include live-service elements. Under its "Nice to Haves" section, it reads "experience helping maintain a live software product or game." The developer hasn't divulged specifics on how much of the live-service aspect will be incorporated into the game. If Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is anything to go by, it may be that live-service will be a key component. Interestingly, the job posting also reconfirms that Monolith's Wonder Woman will ship with WB Games' proprietary Nemesis system.

However, Monolith's approach to including live-service should come as no surprise considering Warner Bros. Discovery CEO's comments on Games as a Service. At the company's recent earnings call, David Zaslav stated that the focus is to "include more always on gameplay through live services, multiplatform and free-to-play extensions" when it comes to the company's biggest gaming IPs with three-to-four release schedules. He further pointed out that Warner Bros. Discovery ultimately wants to "drive engagement and monetization of longer cycles and at higher levels." So while criticism over the live-service approach may continue to be loud from the gaming community, the company's own strategy looks to be doubling down on Games as a Service.

In any case, it will be interesting to see how Monolith will navigate this space and if it will somehow find a way to balance live-service with player expectations of a single-player experience. Some speculate that an official reveal is imminent, specifically a Wonder Woman trailer at The Game Awards 2023. Either way, time will tell what the developer has in store for fans.
