AAA video games using Marvel Comics properties are becoming increasingly common. One of the most popular games starring Marvel's lineup of heroes is Spider-Man from Insomniac Games. This PS4 game was such a highly acclaimed title that it was enough to greenlight a spin-off and a sequel in the form of Spider-Man 2 for the PS5. On top of that, the studio will be developing a Wolverine game, too. While there has been some scarce information since its reveal a few months ago, one important aspect of the game is the story, with the lead writer confirmed to be Walt D. Williams.

Of the games that Williams have written for, the acclaimed Spec Ops: The Line stands out. The game's narrative is a heavy and uncomfortable adventure, deconstructing many military third-person shooters, something that was praised by many players. Williams joined Insomniac Games a few months ago, which caused many fans to speculate what kind of game he'd be working with at the studio. It's now confirmed that he'll be the main story lead for the upcoming Wolverine game.

This was pointed out by well-known Twitter user @shinobi602, as this detail was enough to get them excited more excited about the game, Alongside Spec Ops: The Line, Williams' past work includes Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and Star Wars Squadrons. Considering that Spec Ops: The Line is one of the most prolific and discussed games of the seventh generation due to its deconstructive elements, and that Wolverine will have a mature tone, it leads to exciting possibilities regarding its story. Given how mature the Spec Ops story was, Williams should be a perfect fit for a narrative meant to focus on a serious character like Wolverine.

While the last games put out by the studio have been light-hearted, Insomniac does dip into some darker themes now and again. This can be seen with the recent Spider-Man games, where despite the T-rating, some of the subject matter that is featured can be rather intense. With this upcoming Wolverine game, it's possible that, much like with Spec Ops or his book Significant Zero, Williams can tackle some dark storylines. Given Logan's extensive history, there are plenty of options for that kind of narrative.

It's unknown how much time that has already been spent on writing the game, considering that the studio is still working hard on Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Based on his past experience, Walt Williams' being given the position of Story Lead should mean good things for the plot of Insomniac's Wolverine game.
