There’s good news for fans awaiting Deadpool & Wolverine’s imminent premiere, as the film’s leading faces confirm that one major concern surrounding Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine in the threequel is entirely unwarranted.

Deadpool & Wolverine is the third film in the insanely popular Deadpool film franchise, marking the third movie featuring Ryan Reynold’s Wade Wilson in the lead role for some good old-fashioned R-rated fun and tomfoolery. The first film was a culturally significant mega-hit that shot the character to Marvel Cinematic Universe levels of popularity, without the actual franchise backing to justify it. While the second film was also well-received, the stakes would climb when leading man Reynolds announced Jackman’s return to his iconic role for Deadpool 3, a project that would also see both characters officially join the MCU for the first time ever.

Deadpool & Wolverine's Blade Cameo May Happen (But Not How Fans Expect)

Deadpool & Wolverine's numerous cameos may still include an appearance by Blade, but not the one fans might be expecting.

The Deadpool 3 writers stepped in to assure fans of an R rating when concerns were raised folliowing the announcement that the project would be canon to the mainline MCU, ,and now the stars of the film and its director have come forward to ease another major concern stemming from Wolverine’s involvement. Speaking to Vanity Fair about the upcoming film, Reynolds and Jackman were joined by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, and the three address the possibility of Wolverine joining in on Deadpool’s trademark 4th-wall-breaking antics in the film. “So many actors come into a Deadpool movie and they’re like, “Great, I get to talk to the camera and break the fourth wall.”, director Levy noted when discussing how the film would fit into the broader MCU. “We’re like, “No, no, no. There actually is a system here.” And that keeps Deadpool’s tone unique to him.” Reynolds also chimed in, explaining the reasoning behind that choice succinctly.

There are rules. Very specific rules. You would diminish stakes in the film if everyone—or even anyone else—was also aware of the fourth wall or any kind of meta aspect. Deadpool is the only character who has that ability to do that. If everyone did that, then you would no longer invest in that character as much. You really want to believe that the villain is a villain. You really want to believe that your costar’s character is true as well. Deadpool can undermine that—and does undermine that—because you don’t want the audience to take him as seriously.

The transgressing of the fourth wall is a character quirk that’s central to the character’s humor, with getting the self-aware antics over with fans again being one of Deadpool 3’s most critical tasks. However, it’s also one that has been quite unique to the character even in the first two non-MCU installments, which appeal. Jackman admitted to not understanding that at the beginning of the project, saying “I made the same mistake—day one. I made the suggestion and it was like, “Yeah…,” he confessed, visibly wincing at the memory.

Fans of Jackman’s Wolverine have long nursed concerns about the character appearing in the markedly unserious superhero franchise. With many already questioning the point of the poignant and fitting send-off in Logan after being faced with Jackman’s return, the idea of that tragic and deathly serious character joining in on some of Deadpool’s fourth-wall-breaking humor was deeply disturbing to many. However, all those concerns can now be waived in light of this interview, which reiterates Deadpool’s singular existence and a chance for a more respectful treatment of Jackman’s legacy. “The legacy of Logan as a movie and a character means a lot to Hugh, of course, but to Ryan and Kevin and me as well,” Levy assured everyone earlier in the interview. “Is there an awareness of that legacy within the movie as well? The answer is yes. And that’s another way to protect it.”

With the film now less than a month away and many fans already scrambling to cover all the essential MCU movies & shows to watch before Deadpool & Wolverine it’s fair to say that there are few doubts left that everyone involved is bringing their best in an effort to live up to the confidence Marvel Studios has in the film, which is the MCU’s only 2024 theatrical release. Now, fans and critics can only wait and see how well the movie actually does living up to the hype when it premieres.

Deadpool & Wolverine is set for theatrical release on July 26, 2024.
