8 Bizarre Alternate History RPGs

The concept of alternate history games is nothing new, but these strange RPGs take the idea to a whole new level.

Ranging from simple, real-world inspired rifles and machine guns, to parallel dimension Nazi creations, the choices for the player are beyond imagination. Whether it's from the oldest game, Castle Wolfenstein (1981), or the modern reboot games Wolfenstein: The New Order and The New Colossus there are a plethora of weapons that cause absolute havoc on the Third Reich. But which of these is the best?

10 MP 40 (Return to Castle Wolfenstein, 2001)

A player wielding the MP40

One of history's most iconic, and infamous, weapons of war. The MP 40 is a German World War 2 submachine gun and was used extensively throughout the war. Being the first weapon the player acquires in Return to Castle Wolfenstein(RtCW), the MP 40 does decent damage against most enemies in the game but is not to be underestimated because of its early discovery.

The cool factor carries this weapon because of its widespread acknowledgment in media since the end of the war. In RtCW the MP 40 beats the Sten and Thompson because of its high ammo count and inability to overheat. Making it a more deadly weapon in engagements with multiple enemies.

9 Lasergewehr (Wolfenstein, The New Colossus, 2017)

Lasergewehr

The large, all-black Laser Turret. The Lasergewehr runs on electricity, very eco-friendly for dealing death and destruction against the Nazi regime. Firing out a large, sustained beam or firing short bursts of laser energy, the Lasergewehr deals heavy amounts of damage and even destroys pieces of the environment with its laser hot energy.

Whilst it may slow the player due to its weight, the Lasergewehr in The New Colossus cannot be overlooked. Perfect for destroying robotic enemies such as Laserhund's and a Zitadelle, it is excellent to bring along because of its plentiful amount of recharging stations throughout The New Colossus.

8 MP 43 (Wolfenstein, 2009)

MP43

An earlier version of one of the best weapons in the Second World War becomes even deadlier in Wolfenstein 2009 with the implementation of several awesome upgrades. Deadly damage, great accuracy, and a steadier supply of ammunition available as the game goes on, the MP 43 is an excellent weapon.

Every Wolfenstein Game, Ranked

Wolfenstein is a franchise that has often played second fiddle to others in the gaming industry, but it deserves recognition for some of its games.

With the added upgrades, such as 'Big Bore' (doubles damage), 'Drum Magazine' (doubles magazine size) and 'Recoil Compensator' (reduces recoil), and many more that improve on the already excellent weapon, the MP 43 becomes one of the greatest Wolfenstein weapons ever devised. With this in mind defeating the Nazi forces in Wolfenstein 2009 becomes that little bit easier by using their own weapon against them.

7 LaserKraftWerk (Wolfenstein, The New Order, 2014)

LaserKraftWerk

A pure laser weapon that melts all that gets in its way and beyond. The LaserKraftWerk is a gorgeous, futuristic-looking weapon from Wolfenstein: The New Order, forged by the Nazis in an alternate timeline set in 1960. Looking like a 1940s computer, the LaserKraftWerk carries enough energetic power to destroy even Super Soldiers and heavy robotic enemies.

Once fully upgraded, the weapon becomes more than the sum of its parts. From a good laser weapon to a scoped, fully automatic destructive force. The beauty of this fully upgraded beast can be experienced again and again with subsequent playthroughs to fully experience its might.

6 Flammenwerfer (Wolfenstein, 2009)

Flammenwerfer

Revenge is a dish best served hot when facing the full force of the Third Reich's extradimensional units with the Flammenwerfer in 2009's: Wolfenstein. In the tight streets of Wolfenstein's Isenstadt, a city in Nazi Germany, the Flammenwerfer is perfect for enemy encounters of the fiery variety.

With significant upgrades applied, the Flammenwerfer can double its damage and even reach medium range against enemies, increasing the gruesome, flaming devastation. Considering that most enemies in the game have a natural adherence to fire, the damage multiplier of the Flammenwerfer makes it a brilliant weapon to use during many of the game's tough encounters throughout.

5 FG42 (Return to Castle Wolfenstein, 2001)

FG42

Going back to an absolute classic, both in terms of game and weapon, The FG 42 from Return to Castle Wolfenstein is the brilliant combination of light machine gun firepower, with the lightweight nature of a submachine gun or rifle. Deadly and maneuverable. Even with its smaller magazine size, the FG 42 brings the pain in ways that many weapons manufacturers only dream of.

A unique tidbit on the FG 42 is its accuracy when not using the scope. Rare for this type of weapon. With a good spread, hard-hitting damage, and surprising accuracy while moving, the FG 42 makes short work of all enemy types, especially those pesky Lopers and their acrobatic nature.

4 Leichenfaust 44 (Wolfenstein, 2009)

Leichenfaust 44

The Leichentuchwaffe (AKA, the Leichenfaust 44) is above and beyond any laser weapon mentioned earlier because of its destructive, Black Sun Dimension energy. A big orb of death awaits all those to dare to approach an adversary wielding this juggernaut of a weapon. Primarily used at a distance because of its destructive qualities, the Leichenfaust causes a large pulse of veil energy that disintegrates all unlucky enough to be within its large area of effect.

The Leichenfaust 44 is best used against the toughest of enemies, primarily bosses, in Wolfenstein, 2009. As if the weapon needs any more points of positivity, players can also upgrade it! Increasing the projectile speed, increasing the area of effect size, and reducing the recharge time, as well as doubling the ammo capacity, the Leichenfaust 44 is a weapon not to be ignored for any reason.

3 Schockhammer (Wolfenstein, The New Colossus, 2017)

Schockhammer

The only thing that beats a hard-hitting shotgun, is two hard-hitting shotguns. Dual-wielding these bad boys allows players to tear through hoards of Nazi soldiers and robots on their way to kill the evil Irene Engel with relative ease, and extreme enjoyment.

Possessing a large blast radius that destroys enemies in the players' way, coupled with upgrades like 'Rotor' that increases the shells firing from two to three, brings this weapon to a level far beyond most others in Wolfenstein's history. Ignoring accuracy and focusing purely on the destructive nature of dual-wielding Automatic shotguns shows that it is one of Wolfenstein's, and gaming's, greatest weapons.

2 Dieselkraftwerk (Wolfenstein, The New Colossus, 2017)

Dieselkraftwerk

Similar to the LaserKraftWerk from The New Order, the Dieselkraftwerk is an upgrade on that already destructive weapon. Instead of using lasers to melt away at enemies, the Dieselkraftwerk uses diesel-powered grenades that latch onto walls and enemies alike. These grenades can be manually detonated, allowing for surprise attacks on unsuspecting enemies, as the grenades do not alert enemies when initially attached to them.

With upgrades, the Dieselkraftwerk becomes even more savage. 'Supercharge' is the most deadly, allowing the player to fire up to fire diesel canisters at the same time, completely destroying all within its rather large blast radius. The Dieselkraftwerk is only available through the Wyatt timeline, making replayability a necessity to experience the full potential of Wolfenstein: The New Colossus.

1 Particle Cannon (Wolfenstein, 2009)

Particle Cannon vaporizing Nazis

Rounding out the list of the most kick-ass Wolfenstein weapons is yet another from Wolfenstein 2009. Similar to Call of Duty: World at War's Wunderwaffe (which was released the same year), The Particle Cannon is an energy weapon that releases a continuous beam of twisting energy that quickly latches on and disintegrates all that are unfortunate enough to get in front of it. A perfect weapon for clearing out small rooms or corridors.

Once the Particle Cannon is upgraded it becomes an excellent weapon for medium-range combat. With extended range, larger ammo capacity, and the ability to bend the beam toward enemies, aiming is rarely a thought with this weapon. The pure energetic devastation that is obtained through using this epic weapon is why it is Wolfenstein's most kick-ass weapon.
