Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty has been released to the great excitement of fans, thanks to all the fun aspects which Team Ninja has added to the game. Shaking up the Souls-like formula in a number of ways, this new action RPG is filled with exciting features. One particular feature which has intrigued fans about Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is the divine beasts.

A hugely useful part of combat, the player’s selected divine beast can be called into combat once enough damage has been done. One of the most frustrating aspects of the game, though, can be choosing which of the ten divine beasts should be equipped at any one time. The divine beasts are mostly based on Chinese mythological figures, and are split into the five categories of fire, water, earth, wood, and metal. In addition to everything else that fans love so far about Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, the divine beasts are a unique and intriguing aspect.

6 Qinglong

Qinglong From Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

This wood beast makes it onto the list because it can be hugely helpful early in the game, as players begin to get used to the combat of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. With a huge focus on healing, Qinglong can resurrect nearby allies as well as give excellent and constant restoration to the player and all allies’ health.

Most of the more dangerous, useful divine beasts are focused on doing damage to enemies. Qinglong will not necessarily save the player in a tough battle, but it will give them a chance to get back into a fight when they and their allies have taken too much damage. Qinglong does also provide a damage boost for players' attacks, with an ability that charges weapons with lightning damage. However, the damage it does overall is meager compared to that of other divine beasts. These sorts of powers and resurrections provide an interesting comparison between Wo Long and Elden Ring.

5 Xuanwu

Xuanwu From Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Xuanwu is a water beast that takes on the appearance of a huge snake. Representing one of the most well-known Chinese Gods, Xuanwu is an excellent choice for ranged attacks on enemies. It shoots icicles out which deal valuable damage. Xuanwu will also boost the damage of any ranged attacks used by the player and their allies. All of these make Xuanwu a particularly powerful creature for players using a ranged build.

Xuanwu also causes Power Drop to be cast on enemies who are hit with ranged attacks. Unfortunately, despite this being an excellent way to play a ranged build in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, it seems as if the game's combat in general is more melee-focused. If ranged is too difficult to pull off against melee enemies, then players will be better off leaving this divine beast and a ranged build until they have more experience in the game.

4 Zhuque

Zhuque From Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

One of the fire beasts available in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Zhuque gives the player buffs to Spirit Gain and Spirit Damage Reduction, which can be hugely useful. The Power Gain buff, which it provides when martial arts are used, makes for a hugely valuable extra gain to damage dealt. Players will want to utilize this as much as possible.

Players can summon Zhuque to add flame damage to their weapon, or can use his Zhuque’s Scorch power, which will cause Zhuque to cause huge fire damage in the surrounding area. While Zhuque isn’t the best combat beast of them all, it is a great one for certain builds and types of damage.

3 Tengshe

Tengshe From Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Offering a very different kind of damage, which players will love to try out, Tengshe is a metal beast represented by a flying snake. When facing large numbers of enemies in battle at once, Tengshe may be the best beast of the lot. It fills the area with poison and inflicts continuous damage on enemies. The negative effects caused by this tip the scale at a little over 10%. Some boosts can be added by having a better morality scale as well.

Tengshe’s abilities also allow the player to summon it to scatter potions in the area, which can be hugely helpful when fighting alongside allies. Tengshe can additionally be summoned to apply toxin damage to the player’s weapon in battle, which increases the damage and will help poison enemies even further.

2 Yinglong

Yinglong From Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Yinglong is an Earth beast and a great all-around choice for damage and healing in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Appearing as a winged dragon, Yinglong;s first major ability is that if the player dies while the divine beast gauge is completely filled, Yinglong will revive the player. This can save players on countless occasions throughout the game.

Secondly, when the player summons Yinglong, it will perform a sweeping attack in the area, which is especially great against multiple enemies. Yinglong can also be summoned to apply stone damage to the player’s weapon, and gives good damage reduction buffs upon deflecting attacks. While the player is at full health, there is a damage bonus in attack for the player as well. This is another great beast for first-timers who aren’t as used to the deflecting mechanic of Wo Long.

1 Xiezhi

Xiezhi From Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Xiezhi is a fire beast who is undoubtedly the favorite choice for any build specializing in martial arts. Xiezhi adds huge attack bonuses to martial arts damage. Additionall, it causes Slow to be cast upon enemies hit by martial arts. Xiezhi is probably one of the best choices in the game for whatever build the player chooses, though there are better weapons for fire builds.

Fitting in with almost any style of play, Xiezhi can add flame to the player’s weapon for a devastating upgrade, and the Deistic Exorcism ability summons Xiezhi to fight alongside the player for a short time. This duration becomes even longer when the player’s morale rank is ten or above. Xiezhi provides the upgrades necessary to make players absolutely devastating in combat, particularly with the right build.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty released on March 3, 2023, and is available on Playstation 4 & 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
