Despite having released nearly six years ago, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has continued to maintain its standing as one of the better RPGs out there. With a polished and detailed world to explore, memorable characters, fine-tuned combat mechanics, and an impressive atmosphere, The Witcher 3 continues to captivate members of the gaming community.

The amount of mods to come out of the game is more extensive than most players probably realize. Given the size and scale of the game, there's a lot of potential for unique mods to exist within the world of The Witcher 3. For example, one mod lets Geralt use guns, which contrasts the detailed combat options already present in The Witcher 3, and has the capacity to change up the gameplay in a major way.

One recent mod allows for a unique new traversal system that could potentially replace Geralt's horse Roach, if not for the fact that it requires players to be on a downward hillside at all times. A member of the modding community, who goes by Feregorn on Nexus Mods, recently developed a snowboarding mechanic that allows players to slide down hillsides at high speeds.

In addition to being a new method for in-game traversal, the snowboard also doubles as a weapon that replaces Geralt's swords. However, the snowboard weapon still makes stabbing and piercing sound effects that the swords normally would, but many likely won't mind considering it's a snowboard in The Witcher 3. Player immersion was already broken to begin with. The mechanic looks and plays very similarly to the shield surfing in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

It could largely be due to the recent success of Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher, but demand for The Witcher 3 is alive and well a full five years after its initial release, which is quite impressive in its own right. Very few triple-A games have managed to maintain that level of longevity and popularity.

It will be interesting to see how long The Witcher 3's popularity continues to persist. Games like Grand Theft Auto 5 that have been out for much longer than The Witcher 3 still manage to top sales charts on various gaming platforms, such as Steam and the PlayStation Store. With the second season of the Netflix adaptation on the horizon in addition to the release of this new mod, fans of The Witcher certainly have a lot to look forward to.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
