Like many side quests in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the one known as "In Wolf's Clothing" has multiple endings. Each results in a different amount of experience and rewards, with the optimal choices netting the player 345 XP, 85 crowns, the silver sword Deithwen, as well as a recipe for the Werewolf Decoction.
To get the most from this quest, witchers should be sure to explore every option and gain as much information as possible before slaying the cursed werewolf Morkvarg. Despite there being many choices one can make, the path that leads to the best rewards is a logical one.
Find The Monster's Lair
There are multiple ways to pick up this sinister side quest. It can be encountered during the main quests "Nameless" or "Missing Persons", though it can also be found upon the notice board in Larvik. After the quest is started, speak with Josta, who is the quest giver, to learn about Morkvarg's eternal curse. Following this, speak with the survivor of one of Morkvarg's attacks, Einar, as he will have supplemental information for Geralt and will become very important later on.
Upon tracking the werewolf to his lair in Freya's Gardens, the player can lurk behind the beast and listen to him talk to himself about a lost key. To get more crucial information that will lead to the best quest rewards, players should listen closely and learn the location of this key.
Picking Up The Key & More Information
Despite being able to fight Morkvarg at this point, it's relatively pointless to kill him now as it will yield the most minimal of rewards. Instead, follow the hints given by the werewolf's mumbling and seek out the key in the water nearby. By the gate, one can dive down into an underwater cave where some bones can be found. Among these remains will be the Padlock Key, which not only makes traversing Freya's Garden less tedious but also opens up the locked door within the only structure in the garden.
Within this formerly locked room, players will find Morkvarg's Journal. Reading it will reveal that Einar, the villager who apparently survived an attack by Morkvarg, was actually part of his crew before the raider was turned into a werewolf.
Confront Einar
Return to Einar and call him out on what was read in Morkvarg's Journal. Geralt can fight or talk to him, though the dialogue route is more efficient and reveals more information. When verbally pressed, Einar will reveal that it was he who actually cursed Morkvarg, his former leader. He then reveals that he used a Cursed Fang Pendant to draw blood from Morkvarg and inflict the curse that now plagues the werewolf. To lift the curse, one only has to allow Morkvarg to wear the pendant.
At this point, now that the player knows the full truth, they can either fight and kill Einar or speak to him some more to get the Cursed Fang Pendant. Einar doesn't have very good loot, so killing him is a waste of time and prevents him from speaking his last interesting bit of dialogue that involves him requesting that Geralt slay the beast after lifting the curse.
Do Battle With The Beast
Head back to Morkvarg's lair in Freya's Garden and initiate combat with this beast. As he is a werewolf, tactics useful against this kind of cursed enemy are very effective. The biggest pain about fighting werewolves is their rapid health regeneration, therefore a Devil's Puffball here can greatly help counteract this with the damage over time effect of poison. The base version of this bomb deals 100 points of poison damage per second over a period of 10 seconds. The next level up, the Enhanced version, deals the same damage for 30 seconds. The Superior upgrade also does the exact same damage with barely any more duration at 33 seconds, though it does have an additional charge at 4 total uses as opposed to the Enhanced versions 3 total uses.
Cursed Oil is also very helpful here, as it grants bonus damage on every silver sword slash that can really help against a healing foe. Moon Dust bombs can temporarily block the beast's healing properties for some better damage per second, with the Superior version permanently stopping the HP regeneration. On top of this, Igni is very effective at scorching this beast, so combining it with oil-coated sword attacks and the poison damage of Devil's Puffball is the ideal strategy. When Morkvarg's health drops enough, he'll yield and the player can then speak to him.
Lift The Curse, Kill Morkvarg, & Collect The Rewards
Pick the dialogue option that lets Geralt give Morkvarg the Cursed Fang Pendant and this will change the raider back into his human form. Upon doing so, the player will receive 80 XP. Following this, the man will proclaim all of the things he now intends to do since he is no longer cursed. There will be options to learn of some treasure from him or to fight him. Geralt can do both, so be sure to select the one that leads to learning about the extra treasure first. Learning of this bonus loot will grant another 80 XP.
After gaining knowledge of this extra reward, players should then attack and kill Morkvarg in his significantly weaker human form to get 85 more XP, which also completes the criteria for the end-quest rewards. Following this, head to Novigrad on Morkvarg's loot tip and collect the silver sword Deithwen as well as a recipe for the Werewolf Decoction from the specified pawn shop. This will also net the player another 50 XP. Lastly, return to the quest giver Josta at Freya's Temple for the final rewards: 50 XP and 85 crowns. Not a bad haul for slaying only a single monster.
