The Disney Plus series Willow has been struggling in the ratings department, but its showrunner is nowhere near ready to throw in the towel. Even though the plucky little show has a lot going for it, it may not have enough steam to carry it through to a second season.

That hasn't stopped Willow showrunner Jonathan Kasdan from passionately pushing for a chance to keep things going after Willow finishes airing its current batch of episodes. While reviews for the series haven't exactly been the worst, they're still pretty far from what one might expect from a show with a real future ahead of it. Still, Kasdan has plenty of ideas for where he'd like the story to go, provided he and his team are given the chance to continue. But that's all up to the folks in charge.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Kasdan spoke about his thoughts on the potential of getting a second season for Willow. "I hope so," he replied optimistically. "We're certainly working at it, and I'm begging Kathy [Kennedy] because working with these actors and this crew of filmmakers on this show has been the best experience. We still feel like there are a lot of stories and bigger places to visit." Even this early in the series, it's clear that there are plenty of stories ripe for the telling, and even just one more season would be an excellent opportunity.

Willow-2022-show Cropped

Willow is a sequel series to the classic 1988 film of the same name. Both of them star Warwick Davis as an aspiring sorcerer, despite his lack of natural talent in the magical arts. Some might debate whether the series is a worthy successor. But as far as production values go, it's a visual treat to watch, and seeing Davis in character again with some other surprise cameos from the original Willow is an enjoyable experience. However, it's difficult to say at the moment whether that's enough to keep the momentum going into another season.

It's appropriate that Kennedy would be directly involved in approving a renewal. Of course, it's no surprise, given that she's the president of Lucasfilm. But given she's also a big part of the Star Wars franchise and that Kasdan has said the Willow series was inspired by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there's an interesting connection there. Perhaps that will play some part in deciding the show's ultimate fate.

Either way, it would be a nice surprise to see another season. Kasdan clearly sees Willow as more than just another project, and that sort of dedication should always be nurtured when it comes to artistic endeavors. Here's hoping things turn out for the best.
