Although the Wii U was a commercial failure, Nintendo gained valuable feedback and ideas that would prove to be essential for the success of the Nintendo Switch.
Wii U is Nintendo's eighth generation console and successor to the Wii, which sold over 100 million units worldwide. However, Wii U was unable to recapture the success of the Wii, and sales quickly slowed down in the few years after the Wii U's launch in late 2012. Only 13.56 million Wii U units were sold, and Nintendo had already begun to shift its attention away from the console in 2016 while developing the Nintendo Switch. In March 2017, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild would be the Switch's launch title and the Wii U's last first-party title. Moreover, several other Wii U titles joining the Switch library, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and New Super Mario Bros U. Deluxe.
TikTok user and video game collector Paul Weber successfully acquired the 189th title needed to complete his physical Wii U game collection. In a new TikTok video, Paul recounted the journey toward finally obtaining the final Wii U game, which is The Book of Unwritten Tales 2. The physical Wii U version of The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 is very rare, so Paul needed to travel to the Retro Jakes store in Richmond, Indiana to purchase the game while it was in stock. The physical copy of The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 costs $320, but Paul gladly paid the price in order to complete his Wii U collection.
Paul notes that he originally started the TikTok series to highlight local retro gaming stores. The TikTok series appears to have helped fuel Paul's desire for video game collecting, leading to the final Wii U game being purchased and added to his collection. The TikTok video provides a glimpse into the user's vast collection of physical Nintendo Switch games, and Paul teases another series of TikTok videos to come.
Despite the Wii U's failed attempt to garner commercial success, some Nintendo fans still cherish the console and its game library. Paul's Wii U collection is an impressive feat that will be more difficult to replicate since physical Wii U titles are becoming more rare and costly. Nintendo fans looking to purchase a physical Wii U title may want to opt for a Switch version if available.
The June 21 Nintendo Direct revealed that multiple Mario games are coming soon, including a successor to the Super Mario Bros. series from Wii and Wii U. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a new 2D Super Mario title for Switch with new power-ups and playable characters, including Princess Daisy. Nintendo fans may also look forward to the highly anticipated Super Mario RPG remake later this year.
