An image of a white Xbox Series X controller circulating through the feeds of Xbox fans has rumors flying that it is a prototype controller for a white Xbox Series X console, and Microsoft's response to the speculation is puzzling.

In a statement to The Verge, a Microsoft spokesperson said regarding the controller, "We have nothing further to share at this time." That's about as much of a non-answer as can be given, and is understandable considering how high the stakes are in console development. Console sales have been dropping, trade secrets are sensitive, and big tech companies need to stay ahead of each other to survive, especially now.

Game consoles come in all shapes and sizes, from the palm-sized FunKey S to the first consoles made for arcades, like Pac-Man. When one is developing cutting edge technology for the 8th generation of game consoles, the metaphorical cards must be held close to the chest. Regardless, leaks do happen on occasion, and it seems this one happened when Reddit user Wolfy_Wizzardo, who has since deleted the post and their account, posted a picture of a white controller sitting on a woven grey and metallic chrome mat, titled, "[white] xsx controller."

The post is also missing from Removeddit and The Wayback Machine, suggesting that Microsoft may have already issued DMCA takedown orders over the weekend. That is well within its rights, for the whole point of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act is to protect against unauthorized use of intellectual property, especially information as sensitive as the specs for an upcoming console. Many employees who work with cutting-edge technology are expected to remain mum about anything they might see or hear at work, and will often sign contracts to that effect.

If a figurehead like Microsoft tries too hard to quash rumors, it may trigger a Streisand Effect and spread the news even further. If it says nothing, rumors may fly unchecked regardless. But if Microsoft states specifically that it is saying nothing, then it gets to hang in the reasonably comfortable realm of plausible deniability. However, that won't stop its employees from crowing about how Xbox Series X is better than the PS5.

Regardless of whether or not the leaked controller is for the Series X, the Lockhart Series S, or is simply a faked image, Microsoft cannot confirm or deny anything about the development of its consoles. Microsoft's response, or lack thereof, is understandable considering the volatile and transient nature of the public consciousness. "PR Speak" is how companies control the narrative around their products, and Microsoft's answer is typical for its kind.
