Gamescom is going on now in Cologne, Germany, and runs until August 28. One of the most significant gaming events of the year, the event has already brought several new reveals, including multiple original IPs like the sci-fi shooter Scars Above and the pirate-themed strategy game Tortuga.

Among these new announcements is the upcoming open-world historical fantasy RPG Where Winds Meet. Inspired by Chinese history and mythology, developers revealed the game with a short trailer during Gamescom’s opening event, and a longer extended gameplay trailer the same day.

Developed by the up-and-coming Everstone Studio, Where Winds Meet is a fantasy martial arts epic set in the closing days of China’s Ten Kingdoms period. Players take the role of a wandering swordsman in a land torn apart by war following the death of China’s last Tang Emperor. The protagonist will encounter a variety of foes as they embark on their epic quest across the land, battling humans, monsters, and wild beasts. Players will also have to decide whether to uphold the swordsman’s code of honor by fighting only to defend the weak or sow chaos by fighting only for themselves.

The Gamescom Premier and Extended Gameplay Trailers open with scenes depicting the Emperor’s final moments, followed by glimpses of the swordsman’s adventures across tenth-century China. Prominent set pieces include scaling a snowy mountain, battling giant warriors’ bamboo forest, and igniting a warship’s gunpowder storage with a flaming arrow. The trailer also features some story teasers, foreshadowing the swordsman’s rivalry with a mysterious white-haired warrior.

Where Winds Meet’s Gameplay trailer features extended versions of those scenes and a good deal of gameplay that wasn’t shown at the Gamescom live event. Among them is a lengthy sequence set in a large city. The protagonist moves among the crowds, buying information from a beggar and retrieving a package from a shady merchant. He then telekinetically swipes a dagger from the desk of a local official, triggering a rooftop chase sequence that’s very reminiscent of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed. Finally, after paralyzing several opponents with his seemingly supernatural martial arts abilities, he escapes on the back of a moving carriage.

The extended gameplay trailer also features several of Where Winds Meet’s open-world abilities. These include fishing, goose hunting, investigating a meteor strike, and intimidating a bear. Though it’s not featured in the trailers, the upcoming open-world RPG also lets players participate in careers like merchant and traveling doctor. Additionally, Where Winds Meet reportedly lets players build custom structures from over 600 components.
