Firefly was a huge hit for many sci-fi and fantasy fans. Unfortunately, Fox Studios didn't feel the same way and canceled it in its maiden season. Fans were happy to see the show receive a theatrical release in the feature film Serenity, and hoped it was enough to breathe new life into the series. Unfortunately, aside from some spinoff comic books and graphic novels, the show hasn't seen the light of day in over twenty years.

This is no fault of the cast, however, as they were amazing. That's why their careers continued to thrive on the big and little screen. While many of them make a passing reference to their role in Firefly, it's not likely the show will ever return. In the meantime, catch these actors and actresses in their current projects.

Nathan Fillion

Nathan Fillion in The Rookie

Captain Malcolm Reynolds' Nathan Fillion is one of the most recognizable faces in geek fandom. His career hasn't seen any signs of slowing down after Firefly's short tenure. He currently holds a starring role on the crime procedural drama The Rookie as Officer John Nolan. However, gamers will forever know Fillion as the comedic yet tough-as-nails Guardian Cayde-6 in Destiny.

Meanwhile, James Gunn put him in his 2021 comic book movie The Suicide Squad as T.D.K. and Master Karja in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3. Gunn has also cast Fillion for the upcoming Superman: Legacy in the role of Guy Gardner, one of Earth's Green Lanterns.

Gina Torres

Gina Torres in 9-1-1 as Captain Vega

Gina Torres had no intention of letting her career slow down afterFirefly. Fans may recognize her voice as Ikora Rey from Destiny, where she worked alongside her co-star Nathan Fillion again. She has appeared on the big screen, reprising her role as Cas from The Matrix Reloaded, and later found a regular role in the USA comedy-drama Suits as a high-powered attorney and boss at the law firm. She eventually joined Rob Lowe on the drama 9-1-1: Lone Star, where she stopped taking orders and became the Captain as Captain Vega.

Alan Tudyk

Most recently, the former pilot of Serenity has found work with his voice, taking on roles in animated shows. He's voiced Joker and Clayface in the animated Harley Quinn series on MAX and Optimus Prime in Transformers: Earthspark. A fan-favorite voice-acting role was K-2SO in Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Back in 2019, he reunited with his former cast mate Nathan Fillion on his series The Rookie for two episodes as a character named Ellroy Basso.

Morena Baccarin

Morena Baccarin as Vanessa smiling in Deadpool

Morena Baccarin found much success after Firefly and her role as Inara. Gamers might recognize her voice as Sagira in the Witch Queen expansion for Destiny 2. Meanwhile, she most recently voiced Gideon on The CW's The Flash alongside Grant Gustin.

Baccarin has multiple projects pending, but due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike, everything is on hold. Luckily, it's not difficult to enjoy her work, especially for comic book fans. She plays a prominent role in Gotham as well as the first Deadpool movie opposite Ryan Reynolds.

Adam Baldwin

Adam Baldwin in Firefly

The man who played the trigger-happy and comical Jayne consistently found work after Firefly, even becoming a series regular on The Last Ship between 2014 and 2018. Before that, he found his way onto the set of Castle along with Nathan Fillion, played an NSA agent on the espionage comedy-drama Chuck, and lent his voice to a few video games and animated series. With his type of humor and stern demeanor, he added plenty of value to the projects.

More recently, Baldwin appeared in an episode of 9-1-1: Lone Star. He has an upcoming project titled Love, Courage, and the Battle of Bushy Run about the aftermath of the French and Indian War, set in 1763.

Jewel Staite

Firefly Jewel Staite

The former Firefly engineer and heart of gold stars in Family Law as Abigail Bianchi. It's a Canadian legal drama on The CW. Before that, she appeared in a single episode of the rebooted Quantum Leap and found small roles on various TV dramas from The Magicians to The Killing. Nathan Fillion also brought her onto his show Castle in 2016, allowing the two to work together again.

Staite has one project in post-production called Chasing Midnight where she holds a starring role, but there's no word on a release date.

Sean Maher

Firefly 2002 Simon Tam

Doctor Simon Tam lends his voice to many different projects these days, from animated projects to podcasts. The podcast in question, of course, is the Stranger Things spin-off podcast Rebel Robin: Surviving Hawkins which follows Robin Buckley. Coincidentally, the name Rebel Robin points to Sean Maher's previous roles as Dick Grayson and Nightwing, a.k.a. the first Robin in several DC projects, including Teen Titans Go! vs Teen Titans and Batman: Hush.

Summer Glau

Summer Glau was a breakout actress in Firefly and Serenity, earning herself a successful career after the series ended. Fans watched her career evolve as she took on roles with major hits such as The Unit, The 4400, and eventually Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Summer appeared in nine episodes of CW's Arrow and reunited with former Firefly castmate Nathan Fillion in Castle. Unfortunately, she hasn't worked on anything since 2021, with her last project being a podcast titled Ctrl-Alt-Destroy.

Ron Glass

Ron Glass in Firefly

Though he passed away in 2016, it would be disrespectful not to include Ron Glass here. He was a major part of Firefly, offering spiritual advice to the crew and an opposing perspective to Mal's morally questionable decisions. Glass played Shepherd Derrial Book, a devoutly religious man shrouded in mystery.

After Firefly ended in 2003, he reprised his role in the feature film Serenity and then went on to voice acting and small bit parts in various shows. He eventually collaborated with Joss Whedon once more on ABC's Agents of Shield as Dr. Streiten. The last project Glass worked on was the Ancient Space video game as Colonel Edwards.
