Fans of the incredibly hilarious supernatural series What We Do in the Shadows (a spinoff of the incredibly hilarious supernatural film What We Do in the Shadows) are likely frothing at the mouth right now waiting for any news about the show's upcoming 3rd season. Well, it might not be what they asked for, but it turns out something new is on the horizon, and it might be just as good (and not in that "we have candy at home" way where it just turns out to be raisins).

Filmmaker and writer Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, who collaborated to create the original film and spinoff series, are coming together once again to begin work on a new project, and they're really stepping out of their niche for this one. At least, that's what seems to be the case based on the paltry amount of info they're able to share at this time. But the two New Zealand natives are hard at work, and currently in the writing stages on the series.

"Taika and I are working on a new series right now which we just started writing," Clement said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, "I can't tell you much about it yet, but what's fun about it and what makes it exciting for me is it's something I always wanted to do which is long-form episodes in a sitcom. It's an action-adventure comedy. It'll be different from what I've usually done." Clement remarked about how he already has experience working with the sitcom formula, but this will be an interesting twist on the idea, even by his own rather eclectic standards.

Taika Waititi Jemaine Clement

The unfortunate bit here is that their work on this new series has put progress on season 3 of What We Do in the Shadows on hold. Plus, their other comedy series, Wellington Paranormal (itself also a spinoff of the original Shadows film) is currently in limbo, with Clement himself unsure if it will even continue. Fans of Clement's breakout project Flight of the Conchords probably know what it's like for one of their favorite shows to encounter an abrupt end, but hopefully, the knowledge that both he and Waititi are working on something new might soften the blow a touch.

Anyone familiar with the work of these Kiwi comedy geniuses should be keen to learn more about this unnamed series. Even aside from the aforementioned shows (as well as his upcoming HBO Max pirate comedy series), Waititi has made even more of a name for himself thanks to his stellar directing work on Thor: Ragnarok. Between that and other films like Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Jojo Rabbit, he's proven that he's more than capable of delivering a surplus of yuks alongside some genuinely heartfelt and even hard-hitting moments. As evidenced by What We Do in the Shadows, teaming him up with fellow humor virtuoso Clement only serves to intensify those qualities to the best degree.

It'll probably be a while before anything concrete is revealed about the upcoming project. But just knowing that these two are on the job should be enough to make any comedy snob's mouth water. Here's hoping it comes quick, but in the meantime, why not pass the time with that Mark Hamill episode of What We Do in the Shadows?

What We Do in the Shadows is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
