A game called Hell Let Loose has recently become pretty popular on content creation sites like YouTube and Twitch. In fact, the situation shares some similarities with Escape from Tarkov’s abrupt spike in popularity on Twitch at the beginning of this year.

With the recent spike in popularity, a lot of gamers are probably wondering what exactly is Hell Let Loose. In short, it’s a realistic war simulation FPS that centers around World War II combat developed by Black Matter and published by Team17.

War shooters have been a mainstay in the gaming industry for a very long time. With games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare smashing sales records years after the franchise’s inception it’s hard to argue that military shooters are a tired franchise. The genre is also surprisingly diverse, with many developers handling the structure and gameplay very differently from others in the same setting.

For example, franchises like the ever-continuing Battlefield series rely on massive open playing fields where huge swaths of players battle for control. If one were to compare Hell Let Loose to any military shooter, Battlefield would probably be the aptest comparison. However, whereas Battlefield mainly focuses on PvP action and individual battles on a large scale, Hell Let Loose tasks players with being a working cog in the grand scheme of war.

Hell Let Loose is a realistic war simulation game where two teams of 50 players battle over control of one very large map. Players spawn in a random platoon of six other players making up a team of 50 total players. As such, the developers see effective communication as one of the core pillars of the gameplay experience.

The overall objective of the two current game modes, Warfare and Offensive, is to gain control of the individual sectors that each map is divided into. Warfare focuses on taking and maintaining the most sectors on a map, while Offensive tasks each team with either defending or claiming every sector on a map.

Realistic military shooters can be a bit niche or hard to grasp for some players, but Hell Let Loose certainly looks like a very fun time given some time and experience with the game. Like many modern PC games, Hell Let Loosedoesn’t have an official release date yet but the game is available to purchase now in early access. So while the game is not yet completely finished, players can jump in, play, and help Black Matter with any helpful feedback.

Hell Let Loose is currently available on PC in early access.
