Westworld had the unenviable task of following the wake of HBO's other mega-budget epic, but it has more than lived by to its predecessor. Based on the 1973 film of the same name, what began as a story about a high-tech theme park gone wrong has slowly turned into a dystopian think piece contemplating the meaning of life and the very nature of being. In Westworld, the guests are wealthy men and women who are looking to have a good time, whether that be having sex, killing, or just getting drunk.

The park is full of cyborg inhabitants known as the hosts. At the beginning of the show these hosts are nothing more than glorified Chuck-E-Cheese robots, working to a script and without any sentient thoughts in their heads. But in the first season, some of them begin to think and feel for themselves and they do not like the world they are waking up to. These few sentient hosts begin to rebel, rising up against the guests and eventually the owners of the park too. In order to get to know some of the hosts, we have compiled six of the most significant hosts in the series.

Spoilers ahead for the Westworld series.

6 Dolores Abernathy/Wyatt

Dolores Westworld Ammo Belt

Known to some as the Deathbringer, Dolores Abernathy (played by Evan Rachel Wood) is the unofficial leader of the Host uprising. Beginning the show as a lowly villager with little to no purpose, she slowly begins to gain a sense of self that stretches beyond the bounds of the park. Dr. Robert Ford and Arnold Weber, the two creators' directors-in-chief of the park, decided to combine Dolores' storyline with that of a character named Wyatt, a previous host with a murderous streak and extreme combat skills.

Dolores as Wyatt becomes the true leader of the host rebellion and by the end of season three, she even sacrifices herself to destroy an AI called Rehoboam which not only frees the hosts but also the humans. With looks that could kill, fierce intelligence, and a ruthless streak strong enough to lead a full-scale rebellion, Dolores is the true stand-out character in the show.

5 Bernard Lowe/Arnold Weber

Created in the image of Arnold Weber, the partner of Westworld creator Dr. Robert Ford, Bernard is the technical brains behind the brawn of Wyatt. Before realizing he is a host, Bernard (played by Jeffery Wright) had been working for Delos as head of programming when he begins to discover some abnormalities within the hive mind that is controlling the host.

At the end of season one, Bernard discovers that he is a host. He goes on a journey of self-actualization across the next two seasons leading up to him at the end of season three having realized he holds the key to the puzzle Dolores is trying to solve. Has he freed the host once and for all? Watch season four to find out.

4 Maeve Millay

Maeve Staring Wistful

Going into the later series of the show, Maeve may hold the answers to all our questions locked away somewhere in her head. Played by Thandie Newton, Maeve begins the show as another duplicitous host who knows more than she is letting on. A quick-witted, fast-talking matriarch of the saloon, Maeve begins to shed her prickly outer shell and reveals a devastating past.

In a previous storyline she had a daughter who was cruelly taken from her. Her new mission is to find her daughter, in pursuit of this Maeve begins to cross into the other parks such as Shogunworld or the Raj. In Season three, Maeve also discovers that she has the ability to control hosts and computers with just her voice. With this new ability, what will Maeve be able to do in season four?

3 Charlotte Hale

Charlotte Hale Glasses Westworld

Charlotte Hale (surprise, surprise) is both a human and a host. Played by Tessa Thompson, Charlotte is an executive director at Delos who is cloned by Bernard Lowe and imprinted with Dolores' mind, helping Dolores gain access to technology known as The Forge, a huge database with all the information of every guest who entered the park.

But it turns out the real Charlotte was killed by Dolores before she realized what was going on. So now Dolores has to use some of her computational power to help run Delos, the very company she is fighting against. Host Charlotte proved to have a key role in season three but in the aftermath of Rebohoam's destruction, it is unclear what role she may play in the future.

2 William/The Man in Black

Man in Black In Westworld

The big bad in the first season of the show is a man who takes pleasure in the violent killing of hosts while looking like a bad-ass cowboy in his prime. William believes that there is a hidden meaning behind Westworld. A secret truth is hidden by Arnold and he dedicates his life to uncovering this mystery. He brutalizes hosts in all sorts of ways looking for the answers but he ends up making enemies in the highest of places.

His hatred and disregard for the hosts is unparalleled and his reign of terror brought some of the darkest moments of the show so far. It is revealed in season three that Charlotte Hale has created a host version of William to be her eyes and ears inside the various parks, while the real William is in a cryo-sleep chamber. The hunter has now become the hunted so what will become of the man in black in the latest season of the show?

1 Clementine Pennyfeather

Clementine Westworld Stare

One of the oldest known hosts in the park, Clementine has seen it all. She is initially a prostitute in the old saloon who appears to be relatively inconsequential. However, it is partially the mistreatment of her that begins to awaken Dolores. Once Wyatt has been revealed, Clementine becomes a major player in Wyatt’s gang of rebels looking to break free of the park.

In season two, Clementine is infected with some of Maeve's malfunctioning code which makes her cause hosts in her vicinity to brutally attack each other. This culminates with a near-death for all hosts as they try to reach the reservoir before she is shot by Armistice. She only appears briefly in season three, but it includes a badass scene where she takes on a Shogun Dolores surrogate in Musashi.
