The Blue Devil has done it yet again, for the second week running Sonic the Hedgehog is number one in the box office. Sonic just barely beat the new Harrison Ford led film, The Call of the Wild, which just released and pulled in around $24.8 million in its inaugural weekend. Not to be beaten, Sonic grossed $26.3 million in its second weekend and pulled in a total of $107 million domestically.

This is an undeniable win for the fans of video games everywhere as the movies and critics seem to be getting better all around. Detective Pikachu, which is highly regarded as one of the top video game movies of modern-day, is now paling in comparison to Sonic's stats and reviews. In its opening weekend, Detective Pikachu made a whopping $58 million and grossed around $144 million domestic. As impressive as those numbers are, Sonic appears to be lapping Pikachu in its second weekend alone.

This is great news for Sonic fans everywhere as it strongly implies there's a sequel in store for the Blue Blur. With the success of Detective Pikachu, the franchise is already developing its own sequel set to release sometime in 2022. With both Sonic and Pikachu doing so well, it appears that not only are video game movies making a giant comeback, but they're looking to create lasting franchises as well. Sonic appears to be flying past Pikachu's worldwide revenue so it's safe to say fans will be seeing more of Sonic and the rest of the gang in the distant future.
