Netflix has released a new featurette for Tim Burton's upcoming Wednesday series premiering later this month, and it focuses on Nevermore Academy and the cast of characters who attend the school.
Wednesday casts a spotlight on The Addams Family's dark, quick-witted favorite daughter, with Jenna Ortega in the title role. Unlike past installments in the franchise, which typically centered around the entire cast of Addams Family characters, Netflix's version will focus on the experience of Wednesday Addams' coming of age at Nevermore Academy.
In the featurette, fans get a first look at Wednesday's Nevermore Academy, a large and gothic boarding school where Wednesday lands after getting booted from eight other schools. Creator Burton, star Ortega, and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Milla discuss the creation of Nevermore Academy's darkly beautiful exteriors and interiors, including sculptural elements like gargoyles, a drowning Ophelia statue, and an outsized abominable snowman. The featurette also gives a hint of what’s in store for Wednesday at Nevermore, including cliques of various mystical creatures, monsters, and students with psychic abilities and gifts. The Featurette also explores the special effects, design of Wednesday's dorm room, and the creation of the Nevermore school uniform.
“Wednesday's attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships,” reads the official series synopsis. The series stars Luis Guzmán as Gomez and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Wednesday's famous parents. A new role for Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in the 1990s films, was also created.
The series is much-anticipated, with great excitement by fans of both The Addams Family franchise and those who Burton's previous work on re-imagining television classics like Dark Shadow and other mid-20th century fares like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach. Burton's eye seems well-suited to Wednesday, mixing horror elements and humor.
Wednesday premieres on Netflix on November 23rd, 2022.
