There's some flexibility to be had in the initial character creation portion of Wartales. After picking a preset group of characters, players will be able to customize each member of their party based on how they want each individual to perform in and out of combat.

Traits are small but impactful bonuses that can help characters specialize in their given roles even more, and up to two can be chosen right at the start. A small stat bump at the beginning of the game can go a long way, especially when paired with some of the best character classes in Wartales. Picking the wrong trait in the character creation screen won't necessarily make or break a party, but the synergy they offer is too good to pass up.

Best Character Traits In Wartales

First off, players should consider what type of mercenary they want to make when picking a starting trait. Misallocation of stats will render this entire mechanic useless, so always try to pick a trait that goes well with a certain role or build. Here are some trait combos to consider for each of the classes in Wartales:

  • Ranger - Quick and Nimble (Increased Dexterity and Movement Speed)
  • Brute - Strong and Brawny (Increased Strength and Constitution)
  • Swordsman - Brawny and Thick-Skinned (Increased Constitution and Guard)
  • Warrior/Spearman - Strong and Bloodthirsty (Increased Strength and Critical Hit)
  • Archer - Quick and Bloodthirsty (Increased Dexterity and Critical Hit)

These trait selections were picked according to the strengths of each class. For example, the Brawny and Thick-Skinned traits are excellent for Swordsmen because they can be built as tanks. Meanwhile, Bloodthirsty is great for players who want to invest in the Critical Hit stat, and this can serve as the foundation for high-damage character builds using damage-oriented classes like the Warrior and Ranger.

Picking one trait is free. Getting two, on the other hand, will force players to take a negative trait that will work against their builds. Some of these should be avoided at all costs but just like their positive counterparts, they can be more or less negated. Consider taking the following:

  • Glutton - Increases food consumption by 1
  • Pickpocket - Increases wages by three Krowns
  • Lazy - Reduces Profession EXP gain by 20%
  • Loafer - Reduced Carry Capacity by 3
  • Drunkard - The character must consume alcohol with every meal to be happy

The drawbacks of each of these negative traits are either minor or easy to remedy, making them safe picks that have very little impact on actual gameplay.
