In the turn-based RPG Wartales, picking the right character class at the beginning can serve as a solid foundation for success later in the game. Investing enough XP and equipment into a party member early will eventually make them unstoppable, so players will want to consider choosing the most effective fighter out of Wartales' current roster.

However, since this is still a party-based game, it's important to note that synergy between multiple classes is still important. One type of mercenary might outshine others in certain aspects, but when all of them play to each other's strengths, players will be able to overcome any challenge in the medieval world of Wartales. With that said, consider picking these two classes when starting a new playthrough.

Best Classes to Start With in Wartales

A level one Ranger in Wartales

There are a lot of enemies to fight in the wide, open world, and having someone who can quickly take out targets in the least amount of turns possible can make adventuring all the more painless. The Ranger class is especially great at dealing single-target DPS, making them the most reliable option for dealing with tough early-game units like commanders and heavily-armored soldiers. Players may recognize Rangers as the typical melee-based Rogue from other games in the genre.

What really makes Rangers shine, however, is the Smoke Screen ability, which forcefully disengages enemies and causes them to take an attack of opportunity from their opponents. Pair this with the Instinctive Throw skill and Rangers will be able to pepper enemies with multiple attacks per turn, often resulting in multiple casualties right from the get-go.

A level two Brute's character sheet in Wartales

Another excellent starting class in Wartales is the Brute. These fighters specialize in heavy-hitting attacks that can deal massive damage against an enemy's guard. They can also be equipped with two-handed weapons with wide attack arcs, making them great against clumped-up targets. Players have the option to build them as anti-armor or crit-focused specialists.

Brutes complement Rangers well by providing AOE damage for the team. The Reckless Charge skill is an attack that doubles as a movement skill—use this to deal damage, reposition, or disengage from a bad matchup. Combine this with the Valorous Chain passive to get Valor points by hitting multiple enemies at once. This synergizes well with the Wrath skill, which can be chosen at the party creation screen. It consumes one Valor Point to perform an extra attack that grants the Fury buff if it kills an enemy.

These two character classes outperform the others when it comes to damage, but don't forget to have other party members fill in the gaps. Consider getting a Swordsman to draw aggro and serve as the party's archetypal tank. Meanwhile, an Archer or Spearman can provide ranged support with position-altering skills and team-wide buffs.
