Right before joining Inquisitor Grendyl's warband in Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, players are given the opportunity to create their own Reject, complete with their individual backstories and unique looks. In the game's earlier versions, players would be stuck with the faces of the characters they make. Now, it's possible to change appearances.

Changing a character's looks in Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is simple. There's no need to purchase tokens, tickets, or other currencies commonly found in other RPGs. Here, it's as simple as visiting a barber, taking a seat, and picking a new look.

How to Change Appearance in Darktide

The Barber's cosmetics screen in Warhammer 40,000: Darktide

In order to edit an existing character's appearance, players need to visit the Barber-Chirurgeon aboard the Mourningstar. To get there, go to the left of where all players first spawn in when starting the game and visit the barber's quarters, which should be in front of the Commissary shop. Interact with them to enter the customization screen.

Unfortunately, there is a limit as to what players can actually change with their characters' bodies. First, the barber can only alter core physical appearances — players can't change their characters' height, body type, voice, or name. It's impossible to change a normal human into an Ogryn and vice-versa either. Only the following can be altered:

  • Face
  • Eye Colour
  • Hair
  • Facial Hair
  • Facial Tattoos
  • Body Tattoos
  • Scars

Thankfully, the Barber-Chirurgeon's services are free, and players can modify their appearances as many times as they want. Character backstories cannot be altered, though this isn't a big deal as the options players pick here are strictly for roleplaying purposes. They have no effect on gameplay and cosmetics outside of the color of the default prison garbs given to the player in the beginning of the game.

Those who are looking for cosmetic armor and other articles of clothing, there are two ways to get some: purchase new gear from Hallowette (Premium Cash Shop) or the Commissary (the ship's dedicated armor vendor), or complete Penances.

Take note that the armor vendor mainly sells recolors of the unlockable armor pieces from the Penance system. It can cost up to 360,000 Ordo Dockets to purchase a rare armor piece from the vendor, however.

On the other hand, the Premium Cosmetic Shop features iconic Wargear from the Warhammer 40,000 Universe, including the classic Cadian Flak Armor set, the Death Korps of Krieg set, and many others. These can only be purchased with Aquilas, which are obtained by spending real money.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is available now on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
