Marvel just released the trailer for their anticipated upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision, and audiences are reacting with a resounding "huh?" The intriguing preview seems to be proving that the show will be just as strange and surreal as fans were expecting.

Starting off in an idyllic vision of classic 50's Americana, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) appear to be part of a typical sitcom of the era, complete with peppy music and wacky neighbors. The black and white filter combined with a forced 4:3 aspect ratio drive the effect home, before a dinner with Debra Jo Rupp (That 70's Show) and Fred Melamed (Lady Dynamite) prompt the two leads to begin questioning their grayscale paradise.

This is followed by a montage of more colorful and less boxy clips. From a cackling witch (Kathryn Hahn) to Wanda and Vision notably dressing in costumes of their original comic book outfits, there appears to at the very least be a Halloween motif (maybe director Matt Shakman has a goth side). However, the rest of the trailer features a mishmash of seemingly unrelated scenes, though it will almost certainly make sense to viewers once they see the show itself. Frankly, it will be interesting to see how it all connects.

Marvel has already confirmed that WandaVision will take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame, and this trailer is clearly aware of the question everyone is likely asking regarding Vision's fate after hearing about the timeline. During the trailer, Vision is seen approaching Kathryn Hahn's character, who asks, "am I dead?" Vision answers, "no, why would you think that?" Then she cryptically replies, "because you are." It's rather clear that there's more to Hahn's character than meets the eye, and there's a good chance this applies to pretty much everyone who appears in the trailer.

Teyonah Parris (Mad Men) is also briefly seen late in the trailer. It appears that she'll be playing Monica Rambeau in the series, who had previously appeared as a child in 2019's Captain Marvel (played by Akira Akbar). Her role in the story is also currently unknown, but considering Rambeau took up the mantle of Captain Marvel for a time in the comics, she'll most likely be important, and odds are this will only be the beginning of her involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Naturally, the bizarre trailer raised more questions than it answered, and that might be a good thing. Discussions about WandaVision will make the wait for its premiere go that much faster (hey, glass half full). Besides, there are plenty of other upcoming shows to keep everyone speculating, so fans can rest easy knowing there's always a new reason to nerd out.

WandaVision is set to premiere in December 2020.
