If a show has been on the air for over a decade now, it leaves itself open for first-time occurrences on set. Given its lengthy time on the air, The Walking Dead is certainly not immune to this. So, in light of this particular first-time occurrence, show cinematographer Duane Charles Manwiller shared a behind-the-scenes look of something that he had never experienced before with the show's diehard fans.
While it's always cool to see what happens on set, what made this particular The Walking Dead image unique was the atmospheric look to it. For the duration of its run, The Walking Dead has been filmed in Georgia, a state with a reputation for being hot and humid all year long. So, to be filming the show while it was snowing outside was such a rare change of pace that it was too surreal not to be shared with the fanbase on social media.
Manwiller captured an image of those working on The Walking Dead while the snow came floating down onto the set. While posting the image on his Instagram page, Manwiller noted that he's never had to deal with snow in all the years he's worked on the show, which is sure to flabbergast the fans who have stuck by the show for all these years. He wrote, "real falling SNOW . This shot was literally taken about eight hours ago…hot off the press."
As cool as these moments in time can be, they can also be a little inconvenient, to say the least, if it goes against the setting the show wants to capture. Hopefully, the snow did not last long on set that day, or the talented producers managed to edit all of it out in post-production. Or maybe they plan to keep it in to add to its production value, but that would be one pretty odd liberty to take with how long the show has been on television.
No matter what they ultimately decided, The Walking Dead has already seen enough twists and turns since it began its run back in 2010. It's had showrunners come and go, most of the original characters have been phased out, and, of course, much like everybody, it had to adjust the life in a world ravaged by COVID-19. With all those factors, the show still managed to be one of the most popular shows AMC has ever produced.
Even though the popularity surrounding the zombie fad that once dominated pop culture has faded over time since the show started, it is impressive that The Walking Dead has kept its fanbase engaged long enough that the show will actually get its conclusion on its own terms. That's probably for the best too because popular shows like this only have such a long shelf-life before it either loses its flavor or the fans abandon ship.
