In regard to JRPGs, Square Enix is one of the most prominent developers in that genre. While it houses some iconic franchises like Final Fantasy, the company has also published plenty of new IPs under its umbrella. Square Enix released several games in 2021, such as Nier: Replicant,Bravely Default 2, and Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars. The latter is a brand-new game from the company, being a card-based storytelling adventure game with Nier's Yoko Taro as its creative director. While the previous one came out last year, the development team will be releasing another entry in this series known as Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden.
Voice of Cards has a bunch of unique aspects that separate it from other JRPGs, with a heavy focus on storytelling. This allows for a much more unique experience, with an aesthetic that makes the whole game feel much more like a tabletop adventure. The player has the ability to explore multiple paths in Voice of Cards, as commonly associated with Yoko Taro's works. With such a creative setup for a game, it's little wonder that this game would get a follow-up, with Taro's team leading the charge again.
Square Enix uploaded a new trailer announcing Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden, where it details a new setting that this game will take place in. The trailer details that this game takes place on a remote island, where it has been protected by a generation of young maidens. The island is now in danger, where the party must set out on a voyage across the seas to avert this cruel fate.
Some of the new party members in Voice of Cards were also shown off in this trailer. One is an unnamed young man who is the one who sets off on this journey to save the island, accompanied by a girl named Laty, who is described apparently failed to become one of the island's maidens. Several other attendants and maidens were present in the trailer, where they can assist in battle or the story in some way.
The trailer shows very quick glimpses of what to expect in the game, with various shots of the battles, story events, and more. It might be surprising to some fans that a follow-up would be announced and released so quickly, considering the last game was released last year in November. With such a small gap between releases, it's evident that Voice of Cards unique card-based storytelling allows for more games and stories like this in a shorter time in a smaller scale.
Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden will launch February 17th for PC, PlayStation 4, and Switch.
