The popular MCU hero Vision is taking flight once again in his own television series. The synthezoid character was last seen in the Disney+ series WandaVision, which premiered in early 2021. It’s been three long years with no sight nor sound of Vision, despite an ending ripe for continuance.

Vision first died in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, killed by Thanos on his quest to obtain the Infinity Stones. In WandaVision, he is resurrected as a creation sprung from the mind and power of Wanda Maximoff, both the Scarlet Witch and his grieving lover. Despite dying once again by the series finale, a third version of Vision remains, a ghostly white android crafted by S.W.O.R.D. in order to eliminate Wanda. After a confrontation with Vision, White Vision gains all of Vision’s memories and consciousness, before blasting off into the sky and his next outing in the MCU.

Despite the long wait, according to Variety, there will be a couple more years before Vision’s next chapter comes to fruition. Originally titled Vision Quest, Vision’s next standalone series is currently untitled, and is set to premiere in 2026. Paul Bettany has been announced to be returning to the role. Marvel has hired Terry Matalas to resurrect Vision one more time and serve as the show’s main showrunner. Matalas was brought in after executive producing Star Trek: Picard. In particular, his work on season 3 has garnered high praise, catching the attention of Kevin Feige and other Marvel executives.

It’s been a rough time for Vision fans. When Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the shakeup for Disney’s approach to streaming television shows on its platform, the Vision series seemed to be delayed. Not much later, the original series showrunner Jac Schaeffer updated her WGA page, removing the show from her directing credits. This led many to believe the show was to be outright canceled. But all has become clear, as Schaeffer left to work on a different WandaVision spinoff, Agatha All Along, that will focus on the villainous witch played by Kathryn Hahn and is set to premiere in September.

With the first few years of MCU streaming shows past, many have deemed the MCU’s old strategy of releasing television shows as too rushed and bloated. Visual effects artists were often not given enough time to make the effects really shine, which led to criticism once the shows aired. WandaVision was the very first foray into the MCU television world, and Disney has completely changed their strategy since then, adopting a more “traditional approach” to television, allowing for lengthy development times. It won’t be seen until Vision returns to the silver screen whether Marvel’s new approach will benefit the show and finally give Vision, a character with criminally little screen time throughout the MCU, a solo outing he deserves.
