Video games are a pretty expensive hobby. While a pre-owned Indie game might not set you back as much as a new set of golf clubs, some shiny new sneakers, or even a box of Warhammer minis, they're far from cheap. That's especially true when it comes to big AAA first-party titles, with some of Sony, Xbox, and Nintendo's upcoming games setting players back about $70 each. And, in a stroke of both bad and good luck, October is absolutely jam-packed with brand-new releases, a good few of which are those big AAA games.

There are well over 15 major titles heading to consoles and PC in the coming weeks, and gamers better be prepared to shell out a small fortune if they're planning on picking up the lot. While there are plenty of Indie games and ports dropping in October, this month sees some of the most anticipated AAA games release, and prices are not overly generous.

October's video game slate has already kicked off, with the first major title, Overwatch 2, releasing on October 4. Technically released in early access, Overwatch 2 is taking a free-to-play approach this time round. However, there's a big caveat to this. While playing the game is free, players will need to purchase the premium battle pass, or grind for hours to unlock the game's new hero Kiriko. For long-time fans of Overwatch, it may feel as though they're being railroaded into buying the battle pass, which sets them back around $10.

Arriving on October 6, Nier: Automata The End of the Yorha Edition finally comes to Nintendo Switch and will cost $39.99 from the Switch eShop. This version of the game comes packed with the DLC expansion, and some cosmetics and coliseums based on Nier Replicant. No Man's Sky also makes its debut on the Nintendo Switch in October, bringing the sprawling space sim to the handheld for the first time. No Man's Sky on Switch will cost $59.99 on launch for either the physical edition or the eShop digital version.

On the other side of the coin, No More Heroes 3, a game originally released exclusively for Switch is now heading to PlayStation and Xbox on October 11. This port will cost fans about $59.99, and if they grab the physical edition they'll also get a handful of physical goodies like a soundtrack CD, artbook, and a custom license plate. A Sci-Fi horror game heavily inspired by Alien's H.R. Giger, Scorn releases on Xbox Series X/S, and PC on October 14, right in time for Halloween. Scorn is set to retail for $39.99, though PC players can currently pre-order it on Steam for just $35.99.

October is also a big month for sports games, with both NHL 23 and PGA Tour 2K23 releasing in the coming weeks. Both games are set to launch on October 14, and both will set the player back $59.99 each for the standard editions of the game, with cross-gen version costing $10 more and deluxe editions ranging from $99.99 to $119.99.

Dragon Ball: The Breakers is a unique take on the asymmetrical multiplayer experience, popularized by the likes of Dead By Daylight and Friday the 13th. Dragon Ball: The Breakers is actually one of the cheaper games on this list, coming in at just $19.99, while the special edition is just $10 extra. One of the most anticipated story-driven games of the year, A Plague Tale: Requiem is launching on October 18 for Xbox, PC, and PlayStation. While it may not quite be a first-party AAA game, it's certainly being treated as one, with a lofty price tag of $59.99 for next-gen consoles.

The Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves collection is coming to PC on October 19, bringing two incredible PlayStation adventure games to brand-new audiences. Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves retails for $49.99, which isn't too awful considering it remasters two AAA first-party games. On October 21, New Tales From the Borderlands makes its way to consoles and PC, retailing for $39.99.

The final week of October is full to the brim with major releases, and Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is one of the biggest. Releasing on October 20, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope costs $59.99 for the standard edition, or $89.99 for the Gold Edition, which comes with the game's Season Pass and a Galactic Prestige Pass that grants players some unique weapon skins.

The highly anticipated Gotham Knights is next, set to release on October 21. Gotham Knights is one of the more expensive games of October, with its standard edition retailing for $69.99, while its Deluxe Edition will set players back $89.99. That's not to mention Gotham Knights' collector's edition, which costs $299.99, though this might be a little tricky to get ahold of this close to release.

The definitive version of Persona 5, Persona 5 Royal is heading to Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox on October 21. For all three platforms, Persona 5 Royal will cost $59.99. One of the most anticipated Switch exclusives, Bayonetta 3, is set to release on October 28 and is set to retail for $59.99, or $89.99 for the Trinity Masquerade Edition, which comes with a soundtrack, artbook, and some alternate covers. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 also releases on October 28, retailing for $69.99, with a Vault Edition being available for $99.99. Resident Evil 8 Gold Edition also drops on October 28, packaging the new Winters Expansion in with the base game for $49.99. If gamers are planning on buying every single game on this list, then they'd be shelling out a total of $869.84, and that's just for the standard editions.

October is going to be one expensive month for gamers, but thankfully, Xbox Game Pass is here to lend a helping hand. Three of October's big releases are heading to Xbox Game Pass day-one: Scorn, A Plague Tale: Requiem, and Persona 5 Royal. While they may not be the heaviest hitters of the month, every little helps, and those who were planning to pick up all three will be able to get them for a massively reduced price.

Currently, Xbox Game Pass only costs $14.99 per month. With the standard edition of Scorn costing $39.99, A Plague Tale: Requiem retailing for $59.99, and Persona 5 Royal coming in at $59.99, the total of buying all three games would be $158.97. This means that Game Pass subscribers would be able to get all three titles for just $14.99, which is a gigantic reduction of $144.98. Xbox Game Pass proves time and time again that it truly is the best deal in gaming, and October is the prime example of that.
