Vampire Survivors has 40 playable characters. One of the most interesting characters is the random character, called Random. This new addition to the game adds a little randomness, as well as a new level of difficulty for long-time players who feel the game no longer challenges them like it did when they first started playing.

The random character in Vampire Survivors works differently than in other games, and of course, this feature must be unlocked first. Unlocking the random character is fairly easy, but using it can be tricky. This guide will not only help players unlock the random character, but also include some tips on how this character works.

Unlocking The Random Character

Selecting Random Character in Vampire Survivors

Most of the characters in Vampire Survivors are unlocked by finding their coffin on a particular stage. The random character is unlocked the same way, but the player needs to find one of the previous coffins.

As the player will have discovered these coffins already, finding one of them for a second time should be easy enough. After finding a coffin and unlocking the random character, the player still needs to purchase this character in the character select screen. This costs 5,000 gold normally, but the price scales up if the player has unlocked other characters.

Using The Random Character

Random in Inlaid Library in Vampire Survivors

The Random character starts with a random starting weapon, chosen from any of the standard weapons in the game. The weapon selection includes weapons that don't damage enemies, like the Clock Lancet and Laurel. Unlike other characters that start with these weapons, the random character doesn't receive a free level at the start of a run to get a damaging weapon. It's up to the player to make this work, ideally, by picking an arcana that will allow a weapon like the Clock Lancet to hurt enemies.

This character has a set image and doesn't change appearance depending on the starting weapon. The character appears as a question mark with a face, and it bounces as it walks like someone riding on a hippity-hop. There are eight names that the random character can be assigned; each time the player enters the character selection screen it is assigned a random name, like Chalanda or Birky, from the eight. Each name gives Random a different set of starting passive bonuses. If a player doesn't like the starting weapon or set of passive bonuses they can simply leave, and then reenter, the character selection screen for a different random character.

Additionally, Random's Area, Cooldown, Duration, Might, and Speed values fluctuate after gaining a new level. This isn't a huge change, but the duration of this change is also random. Because of this, Random is unable to benefit from the arcanas that also give a fluctuating value for certain stats. An example of this type of arcana is Chaos in the Dark Night, which causes the player's Speed (projectile speed) stat to change every ten seconds to a value between -50% and +%50.

Vampire Survivors is available on PC and macOS.
