Coins in Valheim come from a variety of sources, and players are likely to obtain them in some quantity through standard gameplay. Once a fan has some Coins, though, they be confused about what to do with them, as there is little information about the currency in-game. Alleviating that confusion is the precise purpose of this guide, and it will explain exactly what Coins are for in Valheim.

To put things simply, Coins can be used to purchase a number of items from Haldor, a trader in Valheim that appears in Black Forest biomes. Notably, Haldor can spawn within a starting island's Black Forest, though he will not always do so, and players may need to do some fairly extensive searching before they locate him. This process is made slightly easier by the fact that an icon that looks like a bag will mark the merchant's position on the map, but this will only occur when he is nearby.

With respect to the items that players can use their Coins to buy, here is a list of what Haldor has on offer at the time of writing:

  • Yule Hat (100 Gold): A red cap in the style of house gnomes.
  • Dverger Circlet (620 Gold): A portable perpetual light source for the dungeon explorer.
  • Megingjord (950 Gold): Gives the wearer superhuman strength.
  • Ymir Flesh (120 Gold): The earthy remains of the giant Ymir.
  • Fishing Rod (350 Gold): Standard issue dvergr fishing rod.
  • Fishing Bait x50 (10 Gold): Common dvergr fishing bait. Fishing rod sold separately.

For the most part, the items that players can buy with Coins are pretty useful, and they will provide various advantages throughout a journey. The Dverger Circlet, for example, allows fans to see in the dark, though they will need to dedicate their helmet slot to wearing it. The Megingjord is also quite powerful, as it raises a player's carry limit in Valheim from 300 to 450 at the expense of an accessory slot.

When it comes to the Ymir Flesh that the merchant has on offer, it is used craft certain items, like an iron sledgehammer, which makes it fairly desirable as well. So too, having the ability to fish can be a real boon, as it provides another food source in Valheim, and players will likely want to pick up the Rod and Bait at some point.

To note, Haldor not only sells the aforementioned items, he is also willing to give Valheim players Coins in exchange for any Rubies, Amber, or Amber Pearls that they have found. Fans should feel free to move forward with these transactions, as those objects have no other use, and then use their newly-earned Coins to buy some of the merchant's more-expensive offerings.

Valheim is available in Steam Early Access now on PC.
