Valheim's Hearth and Home Update has brought a new layer to the Viking survival game. One of the more interesting of these additions is the Lox Saddle. An aggressive and large animal from the Plains Biome, The Lox in Valheim has gained a new purpose with this creation. With the Lox Saddle, a tamed Lox can be used as a mode of transportation.

But crafting a Lox Saddle and taming these beasts can be quite the challenge. Especially for players who are just getting into the Plains Biome in their Valheim playthrough. For those looking to tame the Lox and ride them, this guide is here to help.

How To Tame a Lox

The Plains Biome in Valheim is accessible at any point in the game but players must defeat Moder, the fourth boss in Valheim, in order to craft the Lox Saddle. In order to tame a Lox, players need to feed them Barley, Cloudberries, or Flax over a period of time.

All three of these plants can be found scattered across the Plains Biome but Barley and Flax are most often found at the Fuling Villages in the area.

Any one of these will do and once the Lox eats the first food item, the taming process will begin. Hearts will appear around the Lox and approaching the animal closely will reveal when it needs more food and how tame it has become. Lox themselves are naturally aggressive towards players though and can destroy almost any structure made out of wood. This means that walling the Lox off with stone makes for the easiest taming in Valheim.

How to Make a Lox Saddle

In order to craft this, players need to defeat the fourth boss of Valheim: Moder. The death of this boss drops 10 dragon tears which allows players to build an Artisan Table. The Artisan Table allows players to build the Blast Furnace and Spinning Wheel required to craft the materials required for the Lox Saddle.

The recipe for a Lox Saddle requires 20 Leather Scraps, 20 Linen Thread, and 15 Black Metal. The first ingredient comes from killing Boar in the game. As previously mentioned, Flax can be found at Fuling Villages and can be placed in a Spinning Wheel in order to craft Linen Thread. Black metal scrap is dropped by the Fulings and can be found in the chests in the Plains Biome. Once gathered, this material can be made into Black Metal when combined with coal in a Blast Furnace.

How to Ride a Lox

Once players have a Lox Saddle on them, they can finally ride their tamed Lox. Place the Lox Saddle into one of the hotkey numbered spots and use that number when close to the Lox. Players will be able to see the Lox Saddle appear on the animal immediately. Now all that is left for players to do is to aim at the Saddle and click. This puts the player on top of the Lox and allows them to direct it.

Riding on a Lox is similar to walking in Valheim's open world. The Lox will go wherever the player is aiming; players just have to start it moving forward. Unfortunately, players can't use melee or ranged attacks while riding the Lox but it still functions as a form of transport. It is a relatively slow animal but definitely one that can take a hit. Fortunately, the screen will show the Lox's health and mood as well.
