There are several creatures players can tame in Valheim, the early-access Viking Survival game currently being developed by Iron Gate Studio and published by Coffee Stain Studios. Valheim is a survival game set in the afterlife, with players taking on the role of recently deceased Vikings seeking to prove themselves worthy of the halls of Valhalla by surviving, growing stronger, and facing off against many dangerous foes and deadly bosses.

Naming animals was one of many features added to Valheim in the recent "Hearth and Home" update, the latest of many updates to the game since was made available through Steam early access. With Wolves, Boars, and Lox (large wooly reptiles with a resemblance to rhinos) available to tame, players can now give names to their many pets to help tell them apart. Here's how to take advantage of this feature and give each tamed animal some more distinction in the game.

How To Tame A Creature

To tame a creature, the player must offer the creature food of its preferred food types by dropping them on the ground near the creature, until the creature "acclimatizes" to the presence of the player and grows fond of them. This is indicated by a "Tameness" percentage that appears when the player approaches an animal they have begun to tame. Once the percentage reaches 100%, it is replaced by the "Tamed" status, indicating that the animal has been successfully tamed.

For example, Boar can be tamed by feeding them any combination of mushrooms (except yellow mushrooms), raspberries, blueberries, carrots, and turnips. Wolves are tamed by feeding them any combination of raw meat, neck tail, raw fish, lox meat, or sausages. Finally, Lox can be tamed by feeding them any combination of barley, cloudberries, or flax.

Valheim How to Tame Lox

After taming a creature, players may wish to name them both for sentimental reasons, and for practical reasons if they have tamed multiple animals of the same species. In order to do this, the player must simply approach the creature and hit the interact key (E by default) while holding the left-shift key.

This will cause the name input screen to appear, allowing the player to enter their desired name for the creature.

Valheim is available now for Windows PC and Linux.
