The new biome in Valheim may surprise players with its difficulty. The new creatures and atmosphere make for an almost nightmarish experience for those who go in unprepared. To deal with these challenges, players have an assortment of different weapons and armor also brought in with Valheim's latest update.

One of the most helpful of these is the Staff of Protection, an item that can help fend off even the strongest of enemies. Unfortunately, its benefits come at a resource cost and only last a short while. For those Valheim players looking to make use of the Staff of Protection, this guide is here to help.

How to Craft a Staff of Protection?

The Staff of Protection recipe calls for 20 Yggdrasil Wood, 4 Blood Clots, and 15 Refined Eitr. Gathering all these ingredients will allow players head to a Galdr Table, one of the new crafting stations in the Mistlands update, and create this weapon. This weapon can also be upgraded to improve its durability, Block Force, length per use, and damage absorption.

Each one of these ingredients can only be found in the new Mistlands biome, which is accessible on Valheim's public test branch as of this writing. Yggdrasil Wood can be harvested from the Yggdrasil Shoots that populate the area, but these require a Black Metal Axe. Blood Clots are dropped by the biome's massive Ticks. The final ingredient is the product of Sap and Soft Tissue in an Eitr Refinery. Those ingredients can each be found in the Mistlands, Sap being extracted from Yggdrasil Roots and Soft Tissue found within the skulls of Ancient Remains.

How to Use the Staff of Protection?

The Staff of Protection functions similarly to other weapons in that left-clicking activates its power. Once activated a small orb will be released by the staff and form a protective shield around the player. At its lowest level, this shield can absorb up to 200 damage, a monumental amount that most enemies will struggle to reach. This effect will last for 60 seconds (or until 200 damage has been dealt) and doesn't require the Staff of Protection remain in a player's hand.

This type of magic in Valheim requires a sacrifice. Each usage of this powerful staff comes at a cost of health and Eitr, the measurement of magic within a player's body. It subtracts 40 percent from a player's health (though this will regain as though a player took damage) and costs 60 Eitr. This cost doesn't go down through upgrading, but the duration of the spell increases to 180 seconds.

Valheim is available now for PC, and releases in early 2023 for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
