There are a lot of amazing weapons and items to craft in Valheim. It's not simply enough to run through the vast, procedurally generated open-world and "hope" to survive the onslaught of dangers that are present in the Indie smash-hit. Players that want to truly thrive will need to get their hands on some equipment, and those looking to conquer every boss in the game will definitely want some heavy artillery.

Thankfully, developers have hidden some rather strong weapons throughout the title. One of them, the Crystal Battleaxe, is particularly useful for cleaving through enemies thanks to its impressive base damage and combo. But crafting the Crystal Battleaxe may not seem so straightforward to players that are just getting their bearings in Valheim. To help, here's a guide on what players will need and how they can put together the powerful item.

How To Build A Forge

Players who want to craft a Crystal Battleaxe will first need to have an established Forge. Building and upgrading the Forge is one of the most important aspects of Valheim as it allows players to create weapons, armors, and better equipment. As time progresses and players explore further across the world, they'll encounter stronger enemies and greater dangers, making new equipment paramount in surviving the harsh landscapes.

To craft a Forge, players need to collect the following materials:

  • Coal x4
  • Stone x4
  • Copper x6
  • Wood x10

The Forge should be placed somewhere that is free of obstructions, as players have noted difficulty in upgrading the crafting station when placing additional items. It's also important to note that players will not be able to craft the "most basic version" of the Crystal Battleaxe until their Forge is at least Level 3. To upgrade the Forge to the appropriate level, players will also need to craft some upgrade items and place them near the Forge. Here's an example of two items that can be made relatively early to get the Forge to Level 3:

Forge Cooler

  • Created via Forge.
  • 10 Copper
  • 25 Fine Wood

Anvils

  • Created via Workbench.
  • 2 Bronze
  • 5 Wood

How To Find The Materials For The Crystal Battleaxe

Once players have a Forge and the appropriate materials, they can put together a Crystal Battleaxe. The recipe for the axe itself is as follows:

  • Crystal x10
  • Silver x30
  • Ancient bark x40

The Crystal Battleaxe is worth the price of admission but it can definitely be a bit of a time-sink for some players and takes quite a few materials to craft. Here's a look at where to find the materials necessary for piecing together this powerful weapon.

Ancient Bark

To snag Ancient Bark, players will need to first find a Swamp Biome. Swamps are large, dark, muddy areas that are filled to the brim with massive trees that can block out sunlight. The areas are usually filled with strong hostile creatures, making it a dangerous trek in the early game. In order to chop Ancient Bark from the appropriate trees, players will first need a Bronze Axe.

Ancient Bark can also be found in chests sprinkled throughout the Sunken Crypts. To enter the "small dungeons," players will need to find a Swamp Key, which drops from The Elder boss in the Black Forest.

Silver

The necessary Silver needed can be found in a Mountain biome. The chilly snow-filled areas are rife with Silver Deposits, and players will need an Iron Pickaxe to mine them. Thankfully that's all there is to getting the necessary silver. The ore mined from the appropriate deposits can be melted down in the smelter by using Coal as an energy source.

Crystal

Lastly, players will need to get their hands on ten crystals. This can, arguably, be the most difficult part of the journey, depending on how adept players are at combat. The only way to obtain crystals is by slaying the massive Stone Golems that patrol the Mountain biomes. These hulking beasts are aggressive, pack 800 health, and are immune to poison, frost, spirit, and fire.

Players should familiarize themselves with these mighty creatures before attempting to farm them, by getting used to their attacks and movements. Farming out ten crystals can take a bit of time depending on how lucky players are.

What Does The Crystal Battleaxe Do?

The Crystal Battleaxe is a two-handed weapon that comes packed with a 3-hit combo attack. The best part is that it will hit for double damage on the final strike of each combo. It also has an alternate attack that is faster, does half of the normal damage, but has 4-times the stagger built into it.
