Valheim is the newest survival game hit to come to Steam. This Norse-mythology-steeped Valheim is, like many other survival titles, all about upgrading and building better armor in order to survive stronger and stronger enemies. But players will also want to look good while doing it, so they should customize the armor pieces that allow it.

Customized Armor Pieces

Players can only customize certain armor pieces in Valheim, and the choices for those customizations are currently very limited. While many hope that the upcoming Hearth and Home update to Valheim will add more color options, players will just have to make do with those available for now. The pieces which can be customized in Valheim's current state are as follows:

Customizing a Shield or Cloak

In order to customize an armor piece, players will have to make it from scratch. There is currently no way to alter a piece that has already been made; once players choose a color for their cloaks or shields, they are stuck with them. When players are using their Forge or Valheim Workbench to create the shield or cloak, there is a "Style" button towards the top of the crafting menu that allows them to choose a color combination.

Color Choices and Combinations

Depending on the shield or cloak chosen, players will have between four and seven choices for color combinations. The wood and banded shield each have four choices, the linen cloak has five, and the remainder of the shields have seven colors and patterns to choose from. Here are the colors currently in Valheim;

While the linen cloak does not offer any additional protection from the Lox cape or the cloak from Valheim's cold-resistant Wolf Armor set and it does not offer the same warmth and protection from cold, it is the only customizable wearable item in the game, making it a desired item to craft. It does take smelted silver and linen to create; players must have braved the dangers of the Plains biome in order to get the flax needed to create it. Players will also need an artisan table, which can only be made from one of the items dropped by Moder, the Mountain biome's boss.

However, customized shields can be made at the beginning of the game with fairly basic materials. And the fact that players can customize any of their shields (except the bronze buckler) with some beautiful and very Viking-like patterns is a wonderful hidden bonus in the world of Valheim.

Valheim is currently in Early Access for PC.
