Highlights

  • Valheim should expand its roster of tamable animals, allowing for more unique benefits such as new means of transportation.
  • The parking system for boats needs improvement, including tethering boats with ropes or reinforcing them with metal materials.
  • Players want the ability to build additional structures on boats, such as light sources, beds, cooking, and crafting stations, to enhance their benefits.

From highly requested features within the community to officially confirmed features that will arrive in future updates, Valheim potentially has a lot in store before the game fully releases. Given the current state of Valheim, there are a few particular features that deserve an update, overhaul, or introduction to the game before it will feel like a complete experience.

Despite having an extensive amount of content available already, Valheim is currently in an early-access state of development, with a full release that doesn’t have a date yet. Future updates for Valheim will continue to expand the game to new heights. On top of new areas, enemies, and tiers of progression that are expected, Valheim’s future updates should give some attention to a few existing and new features to help bring the game to a finished state.

Features That Valheim Should Add or Improve

Valheim Bronze Sword
  • Animal Taming

Valheim’s animal-taming feature has some good foundations, but it also has some room to grow in future updates. Given how many new animals and creatures will be added to the game by the time Valheim fully releases, the roster of tamable animals should expand at some point far beyond the few animals that are currently available. Having more animals to tame could potentially pave the way for more unique benefits, such as new means of transportation.

  • Boat Parking

Parking boats in Valheim generally requires players to crash into a place where the boat will be easily accessible, which damages both the boat and any dock structures involved. Many players have suggested that the option to tether a boat to a parking spot via rope could solve the parking problem, while others have suggested that reinforcing boats with metal materials could make crashing a less destructive method for parking.

  • Boat Upgrades

While parking boats in Valheim is its own issue, it’s not the only thing that the community has in mind for the expanded potential these vehicles could have. Being able to build additional structures and furniture onto the premade boats could open up a lot of new benefits. Things like light sources, beds, cooking & crafting stations, and more ways for other players to contribute to navigating could prove to be incredibly useful.

  • Creative Mode

Valheim has made many strides toward offering a completed creative mode, including world and resource modifiers that are expected to arrive in the upcoming Hildir’s Request update. As long as the spawn commands keep up to date with the latest content updates, Valheim’s creative mode is otherwise already in a great spot for players who want to experience a peaceful difficulty, unrestricted building privileges, or both. The latest additions to creative mode are also a great way to kill two birds with one stone and offer players the ability to scale world progress based on the server’s player count.

  • Defensive Structures

The Ballista added in the Mistlands update was a good start for defensive structures, but Valheim shouldn’t stop there. Some of the late-game raids can be extremely devastating to player-built structures, so having more options for players to defend their base is a highly requested feature that would be especially helpful for solo players.

  • Deleting Items

The ability to get rid of items in Valheim could go a long way as a quality-of-life improvement. For the time being, the only way for players to trash their unwanted items is to travel somewhere that doesn’t have a nearby crafting table and drop the items on the ground. Otherwise, any items that are dropped in the proximity of one of Valheim’s crafting tables won’t despawn for a while and players can potentially collect them again on accident.

  • Farming

Farming offers players many benefits in the form of ingredients for food sources in Valheim, although the effort required to maintain a productive farm can be quite daunting. The main complaints about farming crops in Valheim are that it consumes too much stamina and that only being able to interact with individual crops makes it very slow for large-scale farms. A popular suggestion is that upgradable farming tools could provide players with stamina-cost reductions. Others suggest that there should be bulk planting and harvesting equipment that players can utilize while riding a tamed Lox. Additionally, the types of farmable crops could use the same expansion that the animal-taming roster also deserves.

  • Filters for Crafting Interfaces

One area that suffers from being cluttered with too much variety from recent updates is the various different crafting interfaces. The same style of categories that the building menu uses could be a huge time-saver for crafting gear, weapons, and food recipes in Valheim.

  • Inventory Management

One of the main topics being debated in the community since the early access launch is inventory management in Valheim. Whether it’s expanding the player’s inventory or making chest containers more efficient, players will eventually need more and more options for collecting the new items that are constantly being added in Valheim’s content updates.

  • Map Updates

As the game becomes more populated with new points of interest, like dungeons and biomes in Valheim, many players feel that the existing map features aren’t enough anymore. With more and more locations to explore, an expanded variety of map markers could be very useful for tracking important areas and resources. Also, the community feels that player-made paths and trails should be visible on the map.

  • Mod support

As a final send-off for when Valheim fully releases, integrated mod support for unofficial mods could be a generous gift. The community has been hard at work making many worthwhile mods, yet console players are currently missing out on any of the fun that mods for Valheim can offer.

  • Sailing Skill

On top of having tiers of progression tied to craftable gear, Valheim also allows players to increase certain skills over time by using them. A sailing skill is a highly requested feature that could alleviate some of the hurdles of sailing, like reducing the negative zone and effects of wind as well as increasing the map discovery radius while sailing.

Valheim is available now in early access for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
