Valheim’s latest update brings new content to the Mountain biome in the game. The major piece of this update deals with a new dungeon in this area called Frost Caves. These new areas are filled with fresh enemies for Valheim players to challenge and new items that play an important part in crafting new armor and decorations.

However, getting through the Mountain biome in Valheim can be quite the challenge for ill-prepared players. On top of this, Frost Caves are challenging to locate and master on their own. For those players looking to locate these Frost Caves and better understand what to expect once inside, this guide is here to help.

How to Find Frost Caves in Valheim

In this game, players need to progress by gathering resources and improving their equipment, and the best markers in Valheim are its five challenging bosses. Frost Caves spawn exclusively in the Mountain biome, and, as such, players should have at least beaten the third boss of Valheim, Bonemass, before looking for these new dungeons.

With that boss defeated, players can explore a Mountain biome that they have not previously been to to locate a Frost Cave. On top of this, players need to make sure they have equipped either Valheim’s Wolf armor or use a Frost Resistance potion before venturing into this area. Frost Cave entrances are reminiscent of the Troll Caves players have encountered in the Blackforest biome. Frost Caves jut out from the side of mountains and have large blue icicles around their entrance. Once inside, players may discover a blue ice wall in their way, but this can easily be destroyed with any of Valheim's weapons.

What to Expect in a Frost Cave

Frost Caves are the host of new items and enemies in Valheim and can vary in size. They function similarly to Troll Caves but open to a much more expansive series of corridors and can feature cave paintings, treasure chests, and even frozen lakes.

New Enemies

There are four creatures that players can find in these Frost Caves, three of which are new. The newly added creatures are Bats, Ulvs, and Cultists, and these each come with their own challenges. Bats are small, aggressive creatures that can be quite challenging to hit. Ulvs are much more hearty, aggressive creatures that resemble Fenrings but trot on all-fours.

The final new addition is by far the most challenging: Cultists. These creatures also resemble Fenrings but wear red hooded cloaks and attack players with flames and claws. The fourth creature that players can find in Frost Caves are the menacing Stone Golems, one of the more challenging creatures in Valheim, but these only appear rarely.

New Items

Frost Caves function similarly to other dungeons in Valheim and are often filled with different corridors and even large vertical drops. As part of the new update, these Frost Caves are the best location for players to acquire the new crafting materials Red Jute, Fenring Hair, and Fenring Claws. The first of these items can be gathered through destroying the Red Jute Curtains and Red Jute Carpets in these caves. The other items, Fenring Hair and Claws, can be found on tablets and along corridors throughout this area as well.
