There are a few ways to travel around the expanded world of V Rising: Secrets of Gloomrot, from using ancient waygates to transforming into different creatures like toads, wolves, and even bats. Players who want to take the traditional approach can also just saddle up on a horse and terrorize the countryside the old-fashioned way.

One of the most useful additions in V Rising's first major expansion is the addition of Vampire Horses. They don't necessarily grow fangs and start preying on innocent villagers, but they do present some benefits that ordinary mounts don't have. Here's how to get one.

Updated June 12, 2024 by Marc Santos: Getting a vampiric horse mount in V Rising has remained mostly the same, and players can expect to get one at about the same time as in the previous versions of the game. The process of turning a regular horse into your loyal servant isn't terribly complicated, but it will take some time before you can do so. This guide has been updated to reflect the changes made to getting a Vampire Horse in the 1.0 update of V Rising.

How To Get A Vampire Horse In V Rising

A dominated horse in V Rising

To get a Vampire Horse, players need to complete enough tasks in the string of progression quests marked in the upper-left corner of the screen. Completing these objectives will reward Vampire Powers and other important features, such as V Rising's endgame Soul Shards.

The quest players are looking for is called A Castle in the Sky, which will ask you to upgrade your Castle Heart to level 4. Upgrading to level 4 will require a ton of advanced resources, including Radium Alloys and Primal Blood Essences.

Once you complete the quest, you'll unlock a new Vampire Power called Dominate Mount. With this power equipped, all you need to do is find a horse in the wild and hit it with the spell. After a few seconds of channeling, the horse will turn into a vampire — one that comes with a whole host of convenient improvements over regular horses.

What Can Vampire Horses Do?

New vampire horses in V Rising Secrets of Gloomrot

The Secrets of Gloomrot back in early access greatly improved the quality-of-life of mounts in V Rising by adding the ability to dominate one. Vampire Horses heed the beck and call of their masters regardless of the distance between them — players can summon Vampire Horses out of thin air by using the Dominate Mount ability again after completing the whole transformation process.

Additionally, Vampire Horses do not need water or any form of sustenance whatsoever. Normal horses will die if they don't have any Filled Waterskins in their inventory — vampire mounts do not suffer from this limitation, and they can be revived when slain.

This new mount makes V Rising's Wolf Form somewhat obsolete as far as long-distance travel goes. Apart from being faster, horseback riding lets players swing or shoot their weapons while moving. Both mobility options also have the Spectral Leap ability, which is useful for phasing through obstacles. However, Wolf Form is more maneuverable and easier to control, so there are still cases where players will want to use this over summoning their horse.
