The next Magic: The Gathering set release, Core 2021, is right around the corner. Although the official street date isn't until July 3, 2020, players around the world are already diving into digital pre-release events to take the new cards for a spin. Usually some game store events would be taking place as well, but that's likely not happening in most areas this year due to social distancing best practices.
Most in-person pre-release events will be cancelled, but digital players can get some extra practice in on Magic Arena, as an alternative. Although jumping into one of the Limited pre-release events will cost some resources, there is a way for Arena players to pick up a few new packs for free.
As has become tradition, Wizards of the Coast activated a new promo code to help encourage players to login and try out the new set. If users are lucky, maybe they'll end up with a few of the most valuable cards in the new Core set for the standard metgame (though digital cards aren't able to be traded or sold). This one-time use promo is similar to the ones that have come before it and unlocks three Core 2021 boosters for players. To unlock the three packs, players need to enter the following promo card: PlayM21
If players have been unaware of these promos, then there may be a small mountain of free boosters in their near future. Many limited time codes have expired, but there are a handful that are still available:
PlayTheros
PlayEldraine
PLAYM20
ENLIGHTENME
WRITTENINSTONE
SHIELDSUP
INNERDEMON
OVERTHEMOON
PlayWarSpark
ShinyGoblinPirate
SparkleDruid
FoilFungus
ParallaxPotion
SuperScry
PlayAllegiance
PlayRavnica
Keep in mind that the Redeem Code Failure error likely means something is misspelled or case sensitive. If the code doesn't work and doesn't show that error, then the player likely has already claimed it in the past or unlocked the cards/styles some other way (like through the intro scenario).
The free boosters are a great way to celebrate the release of a new set, so it's exciting to see Wizards of the Coast sticking with this new tradition.
Be sure to check back in the near future for more Magic: The Gathering strategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, draw well, planeswalkers!
