Marvelous has just unveiled Farmagia, a monster-training title that might interest Pokemon fans with its characters and anime art style. It’s no secret that the long-running Pokemon franchise has inspired plenty of spiritual successors over the decades, both in games and its related television series. Some of the most noteworthy and recent of these Pokemon-like games include Cassette Beasts, which replaces Poke Balls with retro audio tapes, and Palworld, which famously introduced base-building and survival elements to the tried-and-true creature collecting formula popularized by Nintendo’s legendary series.

Last May, Marvelous announced “Project Magia,” an upcoming project from No More Heroes Switch port and Freedom Planet 2 console publisher XSEED Games featuring artwork and character designs by Fairy Tail and EDENS ZERO manga artist Hiro Mashima. Details were light at the time, but Managing Producer Takehiro Ishida stated that Project Magia would be centered around a “new frontier” and shared some concept art of the game’s lead characters during Marvelous Game Showcase 2023.

Little over a year later, the curtain has finally been pulled back on Project Magia, which is now officially named Farmagia. Takehiro Ishida was once again on hand to present this new game during last weekend’s Marvelous Games Showcase 2024, showing off Farmagia’s anime intro cutscene that features various characters summoning monsters from magic cards or other items to do battle and explore the world alongside them.

Farmagia Combines Pokemon with Fairy Tail

Afterward, Ishida explained that Farmagia is about “people and monsters working together” and provided updates on the game’s characters. This includes Ten, the male protagonist who “often acts without thinking,” Arche, his childhood friend who is said to balance both kindness and a competitive nature, another childhood friend named Chica who is described as having “a more reserved demeanor,” and Lookie-Loo, Ten’s sidekick and the de-facto mascot in the vein of Pokemon’s Pikachu who could best be described as a purple fairy-like creature with one eye.

No other details about Farmagia were given at this time, save that it is currently in development and targeting a global 2024 release. Only time will tell if Farmagia can channel the magic of Pokemon’s monster-wrangling formula like Cassette Beasts and Palworld, but the game’s Hiro Mashima-drawn anime visuals and character designs look promising so far. There is also no confirmation about what platforms Farmagia is being developed for, so interested Pokemon fans should stay tuned for more developments about this new take on the beloved creature-training genre.
