Until Dawn is a cinematic horror game released on PS4 in 2015. Upon release, it gained a cult following and continues to be popular to this day. The choice-based gameplay and intricate use of the DualShock 4 made for a positively frightening experience, and now, the game is receiving a remake and will be ported onto PC and PS5.

This remake is welcome, as it brings the game to modern systems while including a lot of new features. However, perhaps most exciting of all is that the PC port opens up new doors for Until Dawn in the form of mods. If the game is treated anything like other horror games such as Resident Evil 2 Remake, modders and players will have a lot of fun with the new title.

The horror classic is getting a reboot and coming to PS5 and PC in Fall 2024.

What is Until Dawn's Remake Adding?

The Supermassive game is being rebuilt from the bottom up in Unreal Engine 5 using the latest tools and techniques. Players can also expect improved animations and upgraded characters, environments, and VFX. All this is being done to provide a more cinematic, immersive experience.

To enhance the cinematic feeling of the game, a broader cinematic tonal color palette has been used. Furthermore, new perspectives have been added to make the story more nuanced and emotional. Perhaps most notably, a third-person camera has been added to Until Dawn, giving players a chance to explore new perspectives.

In addition to all the visual upgrades, the game is getting an audio overhaul as well. It will feature a new score from horror composer Mark Korven. All these changes make the Until Dawn remake worth playing for both newcomers and players who have experienced the adventure before.

The Massive World of PC Modding

On PC, mods have been used to transform games entirely through the creativity of modders. This is especially true of Bethesa titles like Skyrim, for example, which have been modded in a plethora of ways to make the games feel completely different. The Sims games have also enjoyed an active modding community that frequently adds new items and gameplay options. Until Dawn could enjoy the same fate if it catches the attention of the right audience.

The PC port of the Until Dawn remake opens up the door for a host of mods to alter the game in various ways. The changes could be simple, like tweaking the game to make it more user-friendly and accessible. It could also be massive, like replacing the Wendigo with some other creature, whether it be scarier or hilarious.

The Potential of Until Dawn Mods on PC

To get an idea of what's possible with Until Dawn, it's useful to look at other horror games that have been heavily modified on PC. Resident Evil 2 Remake has enjoyed heaps of mods to make things easier for players, or just to provide a few laughs. This includes replacing Mr. X with Thomas the Tank Engine, or changing the music that plays when Mr. X is encountered. The same could be done with Until Dawn, with character clothing changed or monsters swapped out for something more entertaining or more horrifying. Survivors could also be tweaked, possibly adding beloved horror characters to the playable lineup.

The release date for Until Dawn has yet to be announced, but the PlayStation Blog announcement claims the game is coming in 2024. This isn't the only thing fans of the title to look forward to, though, as an Until Dawn movie is in the works directed by David F. Sandberg, who has also been involved with Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation.
