Highlights

  • Mario has had very little breaks from the franchise and has often been in danger or kidnapped, making him one of the unluckiest characters in the game.
  • Bowser Jr. is also unlucky, as he's constantly being defeated by Mario and forced to follow in his father's evil footsteps.
  • Princess Peach constantly getting kidnapped is not her fault, but it shows her bad luck. However, she has started to break her unlucky streak by becoming a playable character in recent games.

The Mario franchise has now been running for over forty years, it has been shaped greatly by the characters that have been introduced; from the lovable main character of Mario himself to the various enemies he has squashed on his adventures.

These are the best games that Wario features in.

Be it friend or foe, many of these characters could be considered quite unlucky with what they have had to deal with over these memorable years of the franchise. When looking at every character to ever grace the predominantly sidescroller adventure, these poor characters are by far the unluckiest of the bunch, with many players wishing that these characters would finally catch a well-needed break from their unlucky streak.

8 Even Mario Deserves A Day Off

Super Mario 64 Speedrun Carpetless Trick

Since being the main character of the Mario franchise since its birth in 1981, Mario has had few and far between breaks from the franchise. Even in the games that he isn't the main character some sort of version of him has been either kidnapped or is in great danger, showing that he has no luck.

Maybe this Plumber wishes to go back to his day job, or perhaps he simply wants a holiday, but for as long as the Mario franchise continues expanding and with plenty more games planned for the future. Mario will continue being somewhat one of the unluckiest characters in the game.

7 Bowser Jr. Needs A Chance To Be A Kid

Some players may argue that Bowser Jr. isn't as unlucky as his dad; those people don't seem to consider how Bowser Jr. must be just as evil as his father if he hopes to survive in the franchise. No one seems to acknowledge that Mario defeats literal children in some of these platformer titles and Bowser Jr. is one of those kids.

He's by far one of the unluckiest children in gaming not just the Mario franchise. Bowser might be an alright dad for the most part, but he's still leading his own son down a dark path where he must also attempt to kidnap Peach and cause mayhem on the Mushroom Kingdom.

6 Stop Getting Kidnapped Peach

It isn't Peach's fault that she's constantly being kidnapped by a giant fire breathing lizard every other game, but it does appear that Princess Peach has some awful luck that this keeps happening to her.

8 Best Mario Games With Playable Rosalina

Rosalina has quickly solidified herself as one of the Mario roster's most popular characters. These games are great for playing as Rosalina.

Thankfully, in recent games Peach has finally broken her bad luck as she can be seen as one of the playable characters instead of the princess that the player will finally save at the end of the game. This doesn't mean that she won't have some unlucky moments as a protagonist of a game but at least she can roll with the punches.

5 Kamek Needs A Nap

Kamek is one of many Magikoopas that can be seen throughout the franchise, those he is by far one of the unluckiest of them all. Part of this is due to his connection to Bowser as his most trusted advisor. While this may sound like quite the cozy position to have, it means that he must constantly encounter Mario throughout the games.

This never ends well for the wizard as he usually ends up defeated. Sometimes it isn't even Mario that must deal with him, as seen in the Yoshi franchise where he's one of the main villains that Yoshi puts a stop to.

4 Toad Time Out

If there is one character in the Mushroom Kingdom that has worse luck than Princess Peach, then it's the Toad residents that live within and around the kingdom. They do their best to help Mario during these games, but that doesn't stop them from being victims of Bowser's wrath.

Be it facing his goons or being tormented by him directly, Toad and his friends always seem to be having a hard time across any game of the franchise. If it isn't being captured or bullied, then it's simply the panic of their princess being missing again.

3 Give Lakitu A Break

Lakitu kart racing in a Yoshi egg

Many players may have not realized that the little turtles that sit on clouds are known as Lakitu. They only remember them from the times they have had to pull a kart driver from the depths of the abyss or have attacked them to steal their clouds in various platformer titles.

Every Mario Platformer Ranked By How Long They Take To Beat

Super Mario Bros. is an acclaimed platformer series, but just how much game time can you get out of the series?

This is exactly why Lakitu is one of the unluckiest characters in the franchise due to them being always forgotten but forever used. They never look like they are having a had time during Mario Kart, but Mario never seems to return the favor in the platformer titles he also stars in.

2 Goomba Squashing Is Banned

A tower of Goombas pursue a Goomba Mario in Super Mario Odyssey

Goombas are one of the oldest enemies with them being around for just as long as Mario himself as been the staple name of the franchise. A player may have never stopped to consider the life of Goomba before squishing it underneath Mario's boots, but Mario must've defeated thousands of them over the forty years of the franchise.

Every single Goomba is incredibly unlucky for being an enemy that must get in Mario's way no matter if it's a platformer or a simple adventure title; every Goomba is dealt with the same way too with a simple punch or stomp.

1 A Ghost Free Holiday For Luigi

Luigi in Luigi Mansion 2

Out of all the characters in the Mario franchise, by far the unluckiest of them all must be Mario's own brother, Luigi. Living his entire gaming life being simply the other brother Luigi has little confidence in himself with few games to call his own.

Luigi's Mansion, which is a title that see's the green-capped brother become the star of the show is still an awful time for him as he is spooked by every ghost he encounters. Many players feel for Luigi who they hope will start gaining some of his luck back soon, maybe after winning a couple of Mario Kart races.
