Uncharted movie fans finally get an update on a possible sequel from the producer, and it's promising.

The film adaptation of the Uncharted video game franchise started development in 2008, with some people questioning if it would ever see the light of day. The film was finally released in 2022 with a total box office run of $407 million worldwide on a $120 million budget. Although the film got mediocre ratings from most critics, it was widely enjoyed by audiences. With financial success and audience praise, Sony's CEO Tom Rothman called Uncharted their new hit movie franchise.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Uncharted producer Charles Roven was asked if there's any interest in continuing the franchise after a successful first film. "Oh yeah! We had a really good time with that movie. The fans really liked the movie, and people who didn’t know anything about the game really liked the movie," Roven said. "So we are definitely looking to make another one of those."

A week after the first film's release, director Ruben Fleischer said he would like to return to the franchise for an Uncharted sequel. With interest from both the director and producer, it seems likely that Uncharted 2 will happen. However, fans shouldn't get too excited yet, as a few problems might delay the film’s development.

The first problem is that the actors and writers are currently on strike. Unless a script has already been finished for the sequel, they won’t be able to write one now, and with the actors' strike, they can not discuss casting or contracts for the movie. Uncharted lead star Tom Holland is currently taking a break from acting, and he still has concerns about returning to the Spider-Man role in a fourth movie, so he may not have interest in returning to the Uncharted franchise if they make a sequel.

Holland was a big reason for the film's success, but recasting him and Mark Wahlberg in the sequel might be possible. Nathan Drake and especially Sully are older in the games than the actors who play them on screen. If Holland doesn’t return for the sequel, getting an older actor and having it take place later could still work. Although Uncharted 2 seems likely fans should expect a long wait as the strikes continue.

Uncharted is available on Netflix.
