The release of Uncharted is fast approaching, hopefully avoiding the pattern of recent delays in the wake of an ongoing coronavirus pandemic. A new poster has officially surfaced for the film, featuring Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, and Antonio Banderas to increase anticipation further.
The Uncharted film synopsis has been addressed moderately in the trailers that have materialized, but the narrative centers around Nathan Drake, played by Holland, and his race to find $5 billion in treasure before the unwavering Moncada, played by Banderas, discovers it first. Alongside Drake stands Victor "Sully" Sullivan, played by Wahlberg, who accompanies the protagonists on a tumultuous journey of hopeful discovery and connection.
The new Uncharted poster highlights Holland's Nathan Drake, towering in the background as the film's leading protagonist, with co-stars Wahlberg, Banderas, and Sophia Taylor Ali positioned beneath him in various sizes. Their dimensions represent their role in the narrative and their significance overall. Tati Gabrielle is represented on the poster beneath Banderas, indicating a connection between them, a hint that has arisen in the trailers leading up to the film's release. Within the backdrop lies the outline of a map and a mysterious island shown before in released footage, calling attention to the setting where most of the action may occur.
The quote included with the tweeted poster states, "Looking good while stealing $5 billion in treasure counts as a skill, right?" reminding audiences of the root conflict these characters will find themselves in. The film has a bit of an Indiana Jones meets National Treasure type of feel, highlighted by pieces of released footage showcasing some high-intensity moments of theft and escape. Nothing appears within the realm of impossibility to bring this iconic video game franchise to life on the screen, as great stunt sequences push boundaries that hopefully live up to the buzz they're generating. The new poster helps to add to the increased adrenaline, clearly elevating the flare absent from the first released poster, which only included Holland and Wahlberg.
Uncharted comes from the direction of Ruben Fleischer, who sat in a similar chair directing Zombieland and 2018's Venom. This project will be Holland's first prominent one since the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it will be enjoyable to see if his charisma can firmly balance between two differing genres. Unfortunately, Holland is Peter Parker in the eyes of many, which may make the transition to Nathan Drake difficult for some to grasp. Nonetheless, it will be terrific to see the top-rated Playstation franchise brought to life with such a talented cast at its disposal. Films based on video games haven't necessarily performed well in theaters, but Uncharted looks to break the curse and establish a foundation for more films in the franchise to possibly be made.
Posters don't usually reveal much, but they provide clues that audiences can decipher and interpret on their own. Seeing the cast collectively reminds audiences of the players involved and delivers some insight into things soon to come. The newest adventure for Nathan Drake and Sully is right around the corner and looks to hold no punches.
Uncharted will land in theaters on February 18, 2022.
